Some cyclists may protest that they are aggressive in the saddle only to become pussycats at their desks, but I don't agree - on a bike you are close to death and so become a more intense version of your true self.

ok, really? so im meant to see a bright light and head towards it every time i get on my bike? that will take me "closer to death" than i'd like

No, Lucy Kellaway is definitely one of the Good Guys - "Martin Lukes: Who Moved My Blackberry" is brilliant.
I'll report back, when I find a copy in the charity shop.

It's a typical piece of lightweight space-filling fluff, designed to get people discussing, and linking from external websites. Seems to be working.

FWIW, it seems a cut or two above 'dross'. What she actually says is "If employers really want to know what prospective employees are like, they should forget psychometric testing and watch them ride a bike." I suspect that's probably right - along with her broad conclusion that you can tell quite a lot about what people are 'really like' by how they cycle: very competitive people are likely to come back hard at overtakers; risk-takers are more likely to RLJ, and so on. I doubt it is - or would claim to be - unerring, nor does it strike me as at all profound - or even surprising. But I'm sure there's something in it.

Load of farking dross; not questioned at all by couldn't-give-a-toss clueless editorial staff, and accepted as gospel by a farking-equally-clueless-apathetic public

They'll be running a piece next week about how gay men make better designers, lesbians make better advertising executives, straight men make better lorry drivers and straight women are good waitresses.

Well I'm obviously Ina minority. I thought it was quite a good article, I have also noticed the same thing and a cross town cycle ride for all potential employees would help me sort of the wheat from the chaff

It's just a bit of observational fun I think. The same logic will apply to any activity you care to mention, shopping, football, driving any sport particularly contact sports etc. Any prospective employer could use that analogy to assess a candidates suitability for any given post based on any given activity/situation/ response. The article isn't meant to be taken literally I would imagine The 'closer to death' or whatever it was, was clearly misjudged but a worthwhile read I think. It would certainly make The Apprentice more interesting though!

That is Lucy Kellaway's normal angle. She is very entertaining on management bollox - I remember a piece she did in the FT about Mission Statements. Essentially "I don't want to be 'passionate' about my work. I turn up, sit at my desk, do the best I can for eight hours, then go home. In return I expect to be left alone to get on with it and not showered in meaningless drivel."

Thanks, that looks perfect as my next email signature!

I ride in a completely manner according to which bike I'm on.
Mostly I'm a sane, law-abiding, citizen, who nevertheless travels rather quickly downhill (thank you Mr Newton)
Much more cautious on a tandem with a family member on the back.
On the fixed wheel I become a profane, motorist-hating, pavement-jumping, filtering, amber-gambling *** hooligan.

Schizophrenic ? Moi ?

*** I don't RLJ - ever, well not often anyway, especially if anyone's looking.

But if the cyclists stops at all the Red Lights were there is traffic but ignores the ones when they are certain it is safe to proceed, this is breaking the law, but it is showing enterprise & initiative to get the job done.
