Looks like your discs were on back to front - I've never seen 'spokes' on discs pointing 'backwards'. They usually point forwards like this...

The composite disks on my Magura M8 race face backwards (the opposite direction to this picture)

I wasn't riding with the dog on a lead my wife and kids had gone for a walk while I headed down a trail investigating . When I'd done I caught up with them and the dog was having a run around so I shot past it and it caught me up running across me , but it get your point

Meanwhile in the "advice that is too late" column (sorry, and I'm glad you are ok):

I think most discs will have a rotation direction imprinted on them. I know my Avid and Formula discs do (or it could be only in the litigious US). Edit: you can see rotation and an arrow on that disc photo posted by Ffoeg close to the inside of the disc.
