Well put. I'm not overly impressed by those who claim to be offended all the time and only want to mingle in a small circle of like minded people.

I think for some of us it's not so much that, as the direction debate tends to take in Soapbox that puts me off. I've not participated in many threads there (generally only the ones that came up in "new posts" with topics that seemed interesting). Of those, it seemed to me that quite a few ended up in two groups of people calling each other names, because that area is unmoderated, and effectively they can get away with it.

I can't say for sure that this is always the way of things in Soapbox, given my limited experience of it, but I do avoid discussion there (whereas I'd join in a similar thread topic in, say, Café) because of this. I am, however, capable of avoiding Soapbox by looking at the forum title before clicking, and regard it as my own silly fault if I end up embroiled in a Soapbox discussion.

As such, I'm not overly fussed whether Soapbox has it's own group to which participants belong or not....

I really don't see what the problem was. I don't go into soapbox much because I'm not that keen on it. It's only a problem if you can't ignore it and/or help yourself posting. I think that admin should've stuck to the 'If it aint broke don't fix it' maxim. Simple really!

BTW shouldn't this be in soapbox? ;)

But a few of us are saying it is broke though. If you read back through this Renard (I still think of you as BJB) and the thread started by Tete you'll see where we are coming from. Besides, if you opt in to Soapbox, absolutely nothing has changed.

Heh heh - I think I've posted on soapbox twice. The only reason I ignore it is that I don't have time to read it! I don't understand how others do, and have time to write those really long responses!! Arguments just wear me out...oh well...

I still don't think there was any problem. The soapbox people weren't unhappy and the rest of us didn't really care. I would like to know exactly what percentage of users, as there must be a fair amount who read but don't post often, expressed a desire to see changes made. I think that most people could just ignore it and unless you have a lack of self control or a touch of OCD as witnessed by the post counts of some of the main detractors you didn't have a problem with it. Just because a few select individuals did doesn't mean that there was a ground swell wanting change. I reckon the ACF situation has made things get a bit twitchy, hence Admin's capitulation. I would prefer it if it stayed the same forum to which the majority signed up to.

To be honest, I'm not sure how people can be offended by shouty rants aimed at other people in the first place. If folk want to argue with each other, that's fine with me. Why anyone would be actually "offended" to see AM knocking chunks out of Linf is beyond me.

Yes, and you've got a good point. I guess I'm partly thinking of my own self-interest here. Every time I go in there I tend to poke people with sticks, and I'm not proud of that. It's a tough one, and I'm not really adding anything to the debate here, so I'll leave the thread now.

Well, don't do it then. I post in soapbox sometimes and I manage to keep it polite.

Quite. I was surprised by how many calls from Soapbox to be made more 'secure' were from people who claimed they couldn't resist going there and misbehaving.

Bit like fat people blaming their obesity on the places that sell them food. Get some self control!
