Boil the egg for 1 minute 38 seconds (precisely), cut pointy end, touch of pepper and serve to my gorgeous wife (who is a professional chef, and wouldn't have "her" Sunday breakfast boiled egg prepared for her any other way).

And there stands a problem I have with boiled eggs

most people say you need to put the egg into cold water
then start timing when it starts to boil

but how exactly - in detail - do you decided it has started to boil
first bubble
multiple bubbles - in which case how many
or when it is bubbling like crazy - and how do you define this??

and what about the size of egg - and age - both of which make a big difference

As I don;t really like them, I just follow instructions from the person who wants it

My wife has a better way of doing it

when it has been boiled - or something like it - take it out on a slotted spoon so the water runs off
and immediately start timing and watch it carefully

when you take it out and all the water has steamed off the shell in 5 seconds then it is done the way she likes

I have recently added an addendum - using an induction hob - which switched off an on - then boil it (or something like that) for 6 minutes before trying

hope this helps

Wehey .... BINGO!

I thought my posting would elicit such responses 😀

@annedonnelly you are absolutely spot on, such a precise timing depends on the egg being Free Range Large. If we have to suffer a medium, or, woe betide, a small, timing reduced accordingly.

@Dave7, please don't tell me that in the stately home where you were dragged up, you had to suffer the indignity of a hard yolk, .... child abuse! Standards man, standards (see below re cooking time).

@ebikeerwidnes, of course you cook the egg, starting in cold water, this isn't the 1970's don't you know! Ah, you see, that's the art of the perfect boiled egg, when do you hit the starter for the 1 minute 38 seconds (Large egg Anne, large), now, oooh, no, now.... It is, of course, as and when the bubbling arises to full ferocity. Size of egg covered above dear chap. Age, age!? Blimey, how long do you have eggs around in Chez Widnes? You're wife "better" way of doing it, quote "when it has boiled - or something like it..." Superb, get yourself on Masterchef fella 😀

@Shortfall, as you say, each to their own. 5 minutes, 5 MINUTES. GOOD God man, next you'll be telling me you have gravy on chips and pass the Port to the right!

Dear me, going for a lie down 😀

She likes them hard boiled - last time I did it for about 6 minutes and she was STILL saying they were a bit underdone!!!

and anyway - your opinions on food have just been dealt a blow with your outrageous comments implying that gravy on chips is not the hight of good eating
Well - not the height - curry sauce can be better
unless you are having beans in which case I can do without either

and Port should be passed to me - which ever way that is

Hope this helps

The way I was taught to hard boil them is to bring to the boil from cold and then turn the heat off. Leave for ages - all day if you like - but probably at least 20 minutes to make sure they are fully cooked.

My mum also used to pour the water from the pan onto weeds she wanted to kill. I have no idea whether that actually worked. I think it was supposed to be the minerals in the water.🤷‍♂️
