I remember the one in 1999. It was an odd sensation, but I recall the sun being quite high in the sky.
This one 2026 is going to be very low to the horizon, so you will need a high vantage point and clear view.

I went to Cornwall for the one in 1999. It was quite funny, the media had gone crazy suggesting that Cornwall would collapse under the weight of all the people going to see it (or similar) and so, almost no-one went.
We drove past fields set up for parking/camping/looking with stacks of bottled water ready to sell ... but no people.
We ended up at an Eclipse Music Festival on the Lizard Peninsula. They were selling cheap tickets in the end to cover costs. We saw Kula Shaker and James .... and a wonderful eclipse. The clouds cleared just in time. Good times.

The one I did enjoy actually was seeing the Transit of Venus one year.
That was nice to see!
I think there were two actually and also one of Mercury in recent years too.

I've also seen meteorite showers, comets, the moons of Jupiter and other planets, the Aurora, etc, but never a full solar Eclipse.

The Lancaster contingent was split with 14 of us going to France and the rest heading to Cornwall. Not sure where in Cornwall they ended up but they didn't get a last minute cloud clearing. We ended up in Eletot; a village east of Fecamp. The village had opened up their football field for camping which was free. Even had toilets and showers. Down in Fecamp the tourist information centre was handing out eclipse glasses, also for free. Quite amazing really.

well that and the cost ISTR it was very expensive even for August in Cornwall type prices. as I know I looked at it and decided against, went to work and just watched it happen with a few colleagues, even though it wasnt totality we got all the effects that go with it got really dark, all the birds stopped tweeting, we had an eclipse wind, and all the trees & leaves were doing their pinhole camera thing.

My recollection of the '99 eclipse was that it was a damp squib: it was too cloudy up here and the Pet Shop Boys wrote a special piece of music to accompany it which was p*$h.

I've just found a few pairs or oxy-acetylene goggles in the workshop and will be taking those home.

Apparently you watch the eclipse through a sieve, but be careful not to strain your eyes.
