I did this in the same circumstances about 10 years ago - and then got stung for not having the car SORN'ed.

Call them and send a letter.

My wife’s first car was sat in her grandmas driveway for a few months after she got a new car, one day a guy with a flat bed came and offered her grandma £50 for it (we were trying to get rid of it anyway) so she said yes and he took the car away without any details or v5 exchanged.
We just wrote a letter to the DVLA and they accepted it no problem.

My cousin (I hate to admit we are related) got rid of my first car for me, he too the v5 as I didn’t really know what to do, later I got a letter from the DVLA saying I had £1000 fine to pay for no road tax, I wrote back explaining I no longer had the car and they again accepted that without question.
