Isn't an air rifle a bit underpowered for killing rabbits?

There's a chap i know who had a .22 air rifle stolen from his home. He'd boast down the pub about how he had it "fettled" to make it twice as powerful as a legal air rifle, saying a pellet would go straight through a bird or small animal. He didn't report the theft because if the police traced the rifle back to him he could face five years in prison.

A mate and I used to use his rifle to shatter milk bottles at a range of about 25 metres, so maybe not!
I just read that to kill a rabbit with an air rifle, you have to place a head shot in an area no bigger than a 10p bit. Presumably, if you had a more powerful weapon, it would be easier to kill it humanely because the target area would be bigger. BTW, I don't shoot animals myself.

Not at all. Perfect tool for a pest control in a small space like a cemetery.

I don't agree with this "pest control" stuff. After all, the rabbits are only eating 2 quid bunches of flowers, not decimating whole crops!

I don' think Hyndburn Borough Council would give permission to someone to go on a rabbit cull in the early hours. If they have done then it wants publicising, but i just don't think they would. It would be illegal anyway as the area where they were allegedly shot is too close to a public footpath. Even if there's no one on that footpath it's still illegal to fire an air rifle 15 meters or less near to that path

Where do you get this legislation from? it's just that after being involved in shooting for the last forty two years, and a serving police officer for the last twenty nine years, this particular law appears to have slipped past me.

Then if that's the case someone has been firing an illegal weapon in a public place. Maybe its time for me to visit the local police station to report this. That's if they're open of course.

"It is also against the law to discharge any firearm (including air rifles) within 50 feet of the centre of a highway (which consists of or comprises a carriageway) IF in consequence a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered. These offences could be committed, for example, when someone is shooting in their garden close to a public highway and the pellets ricochet onto the highway injuring someone."

I'm sure it's possible to use an air rifle to kill rabbits instantly but you have to be a decent shot. The pellets are travelling quite slowly so the trajectory is quite curved. This means you have to adjust the sights to suit the distance to the target if you want to place an accurate shot.
