MK 2 Escort swap the Autocraft plugs for Champions and it would burn out the number one piston. I was a tech in a Ford workshop at the time and we did a lot of them.

All it takes is a split fuel pipe and the whole lot can go up in flames in a few seconds. This almost happened at a Ferrari meeting I attended years ago, but fortunately someone had a fire extinguisher close by.

At a guess it'd back fired in the car park and been parked with the air filter smouldering but not obvious and then...

I managed an engine fire in my MK1 Transit from twatting about with the carb & air filter. I learnt what I know about engines from years of dirt bikes (you spent a lot of time mucking about with spark plugs when you owned 80's dirt bikes) and pre-enjoyed cars, mainly Fords at the end of their life expectancy, so cheap.

It used to back fire when the ignition was switched off, just a small phut, never though much about it. Just that one time it had a slightly bigger result than the other times, I would imagine that it took a while for the air cleaner to get going before it showed.

As a 17 year old I run a couple of Jags (flash git) I then got married at 18 and went down to an Austin 1100, that is what women do for you.
