I think some have taken this thread a little too seriously.
Quite obviously it was in jest about those who are devious enough to get 'payback' to those who dare to park in 'their' space.

Note my use of italics when I say MY.
I have a 6KG lock which I don't want to move around every day. I don't see a problem with shotgunning a rack when there are over 300 in the basement. I'm certainly not the only one that shotguns a rack or who likes to park in the same space each day.

Only problem with have with our racks at work, other than them being wheelbenders, is the amount of bikes that get abandoned there.

When things started turning sour as things got colder and wetter from september to december, the glut of bikes that had appeared during the summer started to whittle down, however the number remained high and many of those still to be found in the rack began to get rustier chains and flatter tyres.

There's one guy who tends to abandon his for long periods and is in complete denial of it. Someone pointed out that his rear tyre had been so flat it had become detached from the rim and had been that way for about a month - he insisted it had only been that way for a few days, and asked if he could borrow a puncture repair kit. The bike has now been sitting there without a rear wheel for about two weeks.

I have two bikes, I leave one permanently locked to my favourite rack, and then just lock the bike I used to commute that day over the top of the other one. It works a treat.
If you don’t have two bikes yet, just buy a 50 squid pub bike… 50 quid over your commuting life really isn’t much to reserve your favourite place …

Odd, very odd

Just like leaving a permanent towel on a sunbed ;-)

The thing that annoys me is when my bike's locked, and despite there being options, someone has locked theirs up so it's touching mine or has actually moved it to get better purchase, sometimes causing the bike to be in a position of stress!

Then again, anything shared by public (or employees) is usually a pain in the arse in some ways. This kinda debate reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm. If Larry David was a cyclist he'd have some major issues with locking areas!

So you shotgun a space but it turns out this was all a joke?

I leave locks in the rack but I never shotgun the space and sometimes all the spaces are full.

I like to think it doesn't bother me when a bike is in my favourite space when I arrive but if I'm honest it does a bit. Guess it must be a territorial thing.

Worse than any of that though, much worse, some numpty on one of them tiny bikes with the really low saddles that you tend to see teenagers and drug dealers on, has today locked their bike to the back of the adjacent row of bikes, (all 6 bike racks face north, with about a 3 foot gap between the back wheels of locked bikes and the front of the next row) but this idiot has parked his bike facing south, somehow locked to the row behind so completely the wrong way round & blocking the whole row) so now you can't pass by without moving the bike out of the way - how dumb is that?! Sigh....mutter.....grumble......

Nowt wrong with feeling a little miffed/peeved/crestfallen if you arrive and your desired slot is taken.

Lots wrong with trying to deny correct use of that space to others by the way you leave a lock.

But the numpty award goes to being dumb enough to whinge about it online

Here for rides.
Rack. Eh? I park mine next to my desk. The lower orders can have the racks I fought to get put in. One middle manager puts his atop the first floor fire escape outside. Of the hardercore commuters, our FD parks his by his desk. The IT guys bring theirs in as often as not, leaving the racks for our tenants staff and casual cyclists and those who ride the 2km from the station.

So what is wrong with doing it in a car park which is not open to the public and there are more than enough spaces for everyone (over 300 spaces).
Note that each rack can only hold one bicycle.

coz it's not yours and you are dibbing shared space/property, there is no rationalisation. It's a bit like the year round cycle commuters complaining about the fair weather ones. Frequency/repetition doesn't grant you inalienable rights over and above others.

I have no problem with leaving a lock or trying to use the same space regularly, I'd do the same, it's the attempt to block the space for others that's wrong.

Why not have a word with HR and see if you can have a little name/reserved plate made up to attach to the particular bike stand? If they say no then you have your answer.

So if there are more than enough spaces for everyone why do you have to reserve a space?

Total opposite for me,sometimes I have to look for an alternative place and also I don't lock my bike upstairs as (my space (sic))Is usually taken up.Too much hassle.

As I said in a previous post, the rack I like to use has only one other rack adjesent to it and no racks backing on to it. This means I am easily able to lock my bicycle securely to the frame without having to do the limbo under other peoples bicycles.

Which I totaly understand, my topic was not meant to be a winge (which some have obviously percieved it to be) but instead was meant to be about the fact that some people think it is ok to damage others bicycles because they took their spot.

Is this serious?! £50 just to claim a free bike rack? More money then sense IMHO!

I bought 15 BSOs and filled our bike shed with them. All the other commuters gave up cos of the lack of cycling facilities, and I now I have the entire shed to myself! £700 quid over your commuting life is a small price to pay for pure cycle-parking luxury!

Sorry, *ducks*.
