little ball bags...
I avoid groups of kids as much as I can, but they're sometimes unavoidalbe. Usually the worst I get is unintelligable ramblings from them, never had and physical contact from them. thankfully.

I was 16 only 10 years ago, and I'm sure I (and most of my mates) wasn't that much of a knob. wonder what's happened.

It's so sad. Sorry to hear that.

A while back, one evening, I was riding through an industrial area that the local bicycle trail passes through (an area the local teenage taggers frequent) and I heard someone in the group in say "Let's get 'im!" They spread out across the trail.

I was on the downhill doing about 20kph. I stood and hammered it up to around 45 (little buggers didn't know the old fart could sprint!) and thought, let's see who wants a Honjo aluminium fender up the rectum. They scattered like rats.

This really saddens me. Having grown up in a tiny village where me and a couple of mates were the only kids there were not the opportunities that kids have in cities but we never got into trouble. I hate this 'we've got nothing to do round here' attitude that they use as an excuse for being petty criminals. I'm all for the decriminalisation of children, if they stop being crims! I've often thought about what I'd do if I was in a situation when confronted by these yobs; I'm a big, apparently mean-looking guy (so I've been told) so I've not *touch wood* had any problems. They normally call me 'mate' and try and be nice, especially if I have my walking pal - a friend's large german shepherd!

sympathies .... but you're ok to ride another day.

Have you reported it to the police? If not, then why not. It is common assault (or whatever the term is). More than likley they'll do F.A., but maybe they will, maybe the group hang round there and will get caught, espcially if you are able to describe the person.

Lots of maybe but don't sit there and do nothing. We pay for the police so get ya money's worth.

To be honest, I don't think it's any worse than it's ever been. It just gets reported more.
Horrible though it is, would we ever have heard about PashleyPrincess' encounter before the days of the interweb?

Feeling for you on this, makes me feel so sad!

Am with 02GF74 with this. Do you still have the boot mark on your bag? Is so it needs to be used in evidence, that scum needs to go down as far as am concerned!

Sorry to hear that PashleyPrincess. I hope it hasn't shook you up too much. Thankfully nothing like that has ever happened to me (I usually just get something like Queen's "I want to ride my bicycle" sung at me), but I always err on the side of caution and cycle out of arms reach of groups of kids.

Sounds like another candidate for my 'D-lock round the back of the head' method. Nasty little bastards.

Providing you didn't think they were about to mug you, it might be interesting to fall off (assuming you can do it in a controlled way and not end up badly hurt) and lie in the road, apparently out cold, and see what they do. I suspect, run off. If they approached with the intention of robbing you, leaping up with a huge roar might just give them all a coronary.

it is all very depressing. I know we have more opportunity to hear about it, but I do think it's worse than it used to be - that's just a gut feeling.

Something similar happened to myself last summer, all i will say is i don't think they will be trying do what they attempted with me on anybody else.

As said above don't take it to heart you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
