Wooden martial arts sword sits next to the bed , i wonder if bit of tai chi sword form will scare them? i do have a 6 foot staff in the loft but thats a bit out of the way in an emergency .
I have a sharpened 50T ninja throwing chainring, crafted before I learned about changing chains before they stretch too much...

The loft could be perfect in an emergency. Doubt they'd look there!

Sad times really when there is not enough Police to adequately cover a town/ county.

Where's all the money gone?, why give it to other countries when we haven't got enough to fund our own?..
I have a theory. Richest part of society (government included) screw things up royally. System is now farked and we're paying for the banks and decades of incompetence in general. Richest part of society barely blinks an eye, poorest part of society gets firmly rogered.

People have been known to set shot gun traps were blank shells are fired towards the thief. It's a lot of trouble to go to but must be hilarious when they brick themselves.

I would like to say I'd give them a good hiding with my 1/2" metal breaker bar but who knows at the time..

That is a very short breaker bar.

If you go out your in a confrontation, they don't want to get caught so are likely to do anything to get away, are you prepared to match them? I'd fancy my chances against most scumbags but why take the chance and the hassle of then explaining your actions. I don't want the stress or the chance of being really hurt.

Turn on the lights, make some noise, film if you can and call the police. Not necassarily in that order

Make friends with a couple of big guys in the street and make an arrangement that you can call on each other at any time if there are any problems. I couldn't stand and watch my bikes wander off down the road.

Best thing is to secure where they are before it happens.
