Not sure but I'd have a problem leaving them too it! The missus would tell me to call the police and I'd probably ignore her and take some sort of bludgeoning device outside with me. Although first things first, I'd put a pair of undercrackers on before leaving the house (if it was night-time)!

Generally speaking I'd guess that any scrote burgling your garage is much more likely to be familiar with a punch up than most of his victims.

If you're not used to getting hit, and not as prepared to put someone in the hospital as the scrote, having a go is likely to get you hurt.

Bare in mind too that said scrote is also probably tooled up with at least a pry bar or set of big bolt croppers, and will probably have little hesitation in using them

My wife has just read this over my shoulder and reminded my that I have gone out and chased people off before now, must have been more foolish in those days. You get a bit hardened when you have people trying to get protection money off of you on a more than weekly basis as I did when back down south with the car sites.

I've been watching a situation develop today, some scrote on house cctv pulling door handles and broke into a car.

From posting the video on Facebook they found who he is and where he lives within 48 hours and it's not looking good for his outcome (rightly so..).

Wonders of modern technology!.

I am fairly stocky due to my weight training and have have done about 10 years of kickboxing and a self defence course for when I did some door security work, so I can "look after myself" if need be. So I personally would ring plod on 999 and get them on the case, then go out and have a go at sorting them.
Tell plod you're going to go out and have a go. Keep a weapon handy that needs your skill or strength to use effectively and tell plod you've got it. I bet it would get a speedier response because they could potentially have two or three crimes to clear up, rather than only the burglary.

Reminds me of the old gag of telling the police not to worry about rushing because you've shot the thief. They turn up in a rush, say "I thought you said you'd shot him," "I thought you said you'd no officers available" ;)

Don't bullpois to get a response. You risk getting fingered for making a false report, or for a public order offence (they'll argue the call handler was distressed). Unusual, but I've known extreme mickey takers get stuck on or ticketed for it.

Don't mention any weapons you may have in a recorded police line. If it goes wrong and you really did then have to defend yourself and you end up in Court for some reason, the police have evidence that your use of a weapon was a deliberate, considered, planned act and not the desperate self defense response of a victim in mortal peril. You'll have negated any potential defence you might have.

Ignore all the stories and urban myths that float about telling you how to get the feds to your door more quickly. They're all bull. Don't let your mouth talk you into a criminal record.

Reminds me of the old gag...
Reminds me of an event concerning one of my old work colleagues. He had his car nicked from outside his house. Just got up in the morning and it was gone. He rang plod, and got the usual response and was told that they would be on the look out for it. Anyway about a week later he was coming home from the pub and spotted his car dumped on some waste ground only a few streets down from his house. He called plod to say that they could call off their extensive search as he had found it. A few weeks later he gets a courtesy call asking for feedback on his case. They asked "Did the police meet your expectations?". "Oh yes" he replied "they fully met my expectations". The police representative was quite pleased to hear this until my mate added, "Yes I expected them to do f**k all and that is what they did, absolutely f**k all".

I knew a fellow DS who had had his car nicked.

A few days later he got a nice standard letter. Sorry to hear you're the victim of crime and all that. The officer dealing with your case is [insert Detective Sergeants own name], and they will be in touch within 72hrs.

Sack the civilians that send out rubbish like this, and use the money to hire officers so there will be more than 4-6 on covering an entire county at night, then people might stand a fighting chance of getting their cars back. Bin anyone with the words "support", " analyst" or "head of" in their title who doesn't wear a uniform.
