Mrs Greedo hates all soap operas and never watches any of them. The mere theme tune to one gets her diving for the remote control. Wouldn't matter I suppose if she did because I'd just go and watch something else or do something but it's just good to know she hates them

One of my guests however is hooked on them and is watching Eastenders. Bloody hell. If I was my mate having to watch that shite every night I'd be demented.

It is utter utter shite!!! and the rest, (emmerdale farm and coranation st must be even worse)

My dad is the same, he once was selling his house near Warrington and some lady came to see it, she was in brookside and also the royal family ( one sec I will google her name ) Sue Johnston was her name, but my dad did not have a clue who she was

Im entirely the same (and thankfully so is the missus). On two "family" occasions over the christmas period I have forced the issue on the family:
Im not going round to see family just so they can put Eastenders or Xfactor on! . Seriously. Who visits family and wants to watch Eastenders, on their TV!?

But Royle Family doesnt count as a soap (ok, neither does X-Factor) surely!?

I used to exist in a situation in which exposure to soaps was sometimes unavoidable. I'm happy to say that the last one I observed was the celebrated festive edition of Eastenders a few years ago when somebody got their face shoved in their Xmas dinner.

Well, I do watch Eastenders, although more because it's on and I'm in, than from any devoted following - I can miss it and not be bothered. I'm not into any other soaps, except The Archers of course, radio is different.

On the other hand, I can't imagine why anyone wants to waste 2 hours watching a bunch of overpaid men kick a ball round a field, together with endless, mindless cliche-ridden 'analysis'.

I too am like minded as Mrs G (and, it appears, Mr G too). The worst is when the Archers chimes in ("dah-di dah-di dah-di daaaahhh...." ). Since our radio doesn't have a remote, sets me lunging across the living room to reach the 'off' button.

However, I have had a few weaknesses. I used to watch London's Burning when it was on (it fizzled out some years back). If anyone asked me, why the obsession, I used to plead a professional interest. Which was a bit of a porky, actually...

Why lunging? Are you so unable to tolerate the music or subsequent voices for the second or too it takes to get up and walk normally? Or so disorganised as to be unble to turn off before it starts? It's not like it's on at random times unannouced.

Or are you just afraid you might get hooked?

If something comes on that I don't want to see or hear, I just get up normally (neither my radio or tv have a remote) and turn off, or over. I never feel the need to get all flustered about it.

I find the music quite grating. In addition, if I am honest, there is a puritanical streak that I do not want any part of it in my house. So I too lunge (in my case) for the remote. As some other have commented, I really do not have the time to get into the stories.

I can't bear football, and find the MOTD music fairly irritating, but I can stand a second or two as I cross the room. Maybe you all just have massive rooms that take half an hour to cross on foot. Maybe you should keep bikes indoors to make it quicker.

Why lunging?

It may seem like spurious urgency but sometime a lunge is necessary for emotional reasons.
Back in the days before remote controls (yes I really am that old) I could lunge across the room and turn the telly off after a few notes of the Michael Pratkinson theme tune.

I hate all soaps/mass hyped show's(strictly,prancing on ice, x-factor).

Soaps are generally populated by actors who genuinely couldn't do anything else, I'm not talking about cameos - how many go on to have a career outside another soap type programs(casualty....etc,etc). I understand it's a difficult career for some who can't get on the gravy train.
Strictly/Prancing on Ice.....z list celebs trying to launch/relaunch careers.
X-factor,BGT please.....!



It's all easy lazy TV.

Sorry, I should have bunged a smiley or two in, I wasn't being entirely serious. I just find it amusing when people sometimes appear to be as fervent about not watching soaps as those who are fervent about watching them...

Of course there are some less good actors in soaps, bauldbairn, but there are actually a lot of perfectly good ones too. Let's face it, if they can get a good role, and stay in it, in a career notorious for unemployment, then I imagine it's tempting to stay put.

I'll agree about 'talent' shows, not my thing at all, and probably cheap filling, but I just don't watch them, like I don't eat many ready meals or drink much fizzy pop.... (although I'm planning to get a takeaway tonight...)
