In between here and there
What bothers me most about this thread is how mean spirited people can be towards the victim of an aggressive driver. Yes Matt did not react well, but that does not big anyone the right to call him names, recommend he stop posting, give up cycling, or take drugs.

It is the sheer number of perceived and or real threats that Matt has posted, to be fair some might be shite driving but it happens all the time no amount of discussion with the drivers is going to help. Not knowing him personally but it seems like he is earning his YT stripes, or has anger issues.

It is not increasing Matt's personal safety and to be frank the drivers confronted are going to be even more negative towards cyclists. Seriously he just needs to catch the wrong person in the wrong mood and the helmet cam will not save him from getting more than he bargained for.

The helmet cam may end up seeing sights it was never intended to see

So now I just do as the other posts suggest, take a deep breath, ignore it and carry on, far more relaxing, safer, and you go home with a nice big smile on your face.

I am going to try and do this from now on.

I didnt want to start another thread where I was just getting abuse from people about how it doesnt appear close, and why I was a tw*t on a bike for going up to him and giving cyclists a bad name.

Sorry guys.

Matthew - that's the most sensible thing you could do. We all get annoyed - tbh if you've posted it on here/Youtube rather than confronting the driver that might be more beneficial for a bit!

As I have said before, I understand everyones comments and am taking everything on board but it is a lot different to say something on here than to actually do it when out on the roads.

I have already altered my route to avoid going through the bad end of Rhyl (and to get more miles in) after incuring a lot of anti-cyclist behaviour in the summer. By no means am I going to give up cycling even if the whole population of cyclists is against me. I enjoy cycling and hate it when someone disrupts my day like this.
What makes it worse is when I come on here and look for positive advice, but I get the usual bombardment of abuse and negative comments from people who have got nothing better to say.

It is easy to lose it out on the road so no worries there, it is also easy to criticise when you were not there, all I would say is be careful because some of these cage drivers will run you down for your trouble, they are in a bigger nastier piece of equipment if they decide a collision is in order.

Matthew - our positive advice is to be calmer. Seriously, it's better to put the annoyance into the pedals than to be decked by a self-opinionated spoilt-child ape of a driver in a souped-up boys-toy that dad's bought him *.

Most of us see exactly what you're seeing on a daily basis. We've learnt that challenging them is unlikely to result in anything but aggression back and frustration.

* Note here that I drive a yellow convertible, although 'drive' is a general term since it spends more time on the driveway than on the road since I bought the bike.

A lot of the comments are trying to be helpful, Try to see that and enjoy your cycling.:bicycle:

Don't worry about the harsh comments - you would get that on a thread about being nice to kittens - it's the nature of forums. Chin up, back straight, chest out.

Sorry guys.

This is a positive outcome. How we got to this position doesn't really matter.

Life really is too short boss

Was this a regular ride, or a commute? If it's a regular ride, I'd try to change the route completely to avoid busy roads and towns/cities. On my standard rides I will be on country roads, and will often not see another vehicle for a few miles at a time. Not only do you have less to worry about, but the route is much nicer this way, as well!

Matt I can only re-iterate what I've said before:

1.You're riding a bike enjoy it. I do, I hope most of us do.
2. Chill, but if you feel you have to chase someone down, do it.
3. If you catch them, it may not end well. For you or them. I'd like to add a bit here, I chased a car after May 2011 Ride for Food and ended up tweaking an achilles that kept me off the bike for a month. You don't have to crash/fight.

If people abuse you on here. Learn, learn again, build a group of friends. There is a hell of a lot of knowledge on Cyclechat not all of it has joined in here yet.

To me, you're operating in a different level of commuting but if you ever want advice, pm me.

Take it easy Matthew, Rhyl only has a population of around 21,000 and I would guess only around half of those drive a car, which means at this rate it won't be too long before you will have had a confrontation with most of the drivers in Rhyl! Have you thought about going to Rhyl Cycling Club? They seem a friendly lot and clubs nearly always have experienced people who could help you out.

Rhyl is a bit too far as it is based in Denbigh, but in the new year I am hoping to join VC Melyd. I go on their rides and have got to know the people there.

The problem is that the majority of them dont cycle in towns, or get out much (dont count on me) so I doubt they would have any experience which would be of relevance (not to dismiss all their advice, they are brilliant with finding places to buy things), in relation to incidents with drivers.

I have got one guys number who I will be contacting when the weather picks up to go on some long rides with. I will enjoy them.
