I have a friend who swears that the difference is enormous. I don't experience that...
I ride bikes with 170, 172.5 and 175 cranks and never notice the difference in the lengths. On one bike with 175 cranks, I broke the left crank and replaced it with a spare crank. It me months to notice that the spare was a 170!

With an older bike, especially Shimano, you need to see if chainrings are still available in the correct BCD. You might be getting a Spa Cycles or SJS generic chainset for spares availability.

+1 for the Spa cycles chainsets. Their budget own-brand touring triple (48-38-26) should do the job for you - and you can choose what crank length you want.
