Bring your bike! I don't know what sort of distances you want to do or what sort of roads you are used to riding on but all of the roads are cycleable. The busiest roads in the area are the A75 and the A76 which carry the bulk of the heavy traffic through the area. If you are fairly confident, you can cycle these two roads fairly happily, but there are so many alternative quiet roads you don't really need to.
