You have some ingenious solutions.
It's been a long time since I did anything with BBs, except take the bike to my LBS and ask them to replace, so I'd have been too wary to try any form of DIY fitting arrangements. And I felt I was committed to the new chainset, so the extra £12 for the BB was worth a try.
I'll see how the current setup goes. The chainset could be moved in-board a mm or so without fouling the chainstay - might be worth it if I find the chainline is too "off".

After a year of use, I have to say it's well worth having. During the ride below the only part I walked was the rough track up from the Wye near Blackwell.
Gotta love a 19" bottom gear.

No front changer fitted. Heel to change down, and this bit of old coat hanger to change up:

Hooks round the middle of a link, and can be used to lift the chain onto the big ring, and pull it all the way round.
Can be done one-handed, while the other holds the bike.

Re the bottom bracket.... If using spacers with a cartridge bb, if a 73mm bb is used with the addition of a lockring on the LHS there is more possibility of adjusting the RHS with spacers, and the added advantage of fitting the lockring is that the the bb can be set up so there is no preload on the bearings!

The double chainring thing (I use 58/38) works well with my 2010 Brompton but does not with my P line I got a year and a half ago. I have added a 5th sprocket to the P line hub, with 21 teeth. Not the bailout I get with the 3 chainring deal, but xtill welcome. The fold with the chain on the little chainring still drops the chain.
