From the end to the inside of the elbow. This assumes you've got proper spokes like God intended and not any of this new fangled straight pull stuff. It's also harder if the spoke is in two pieces.

I was right about that saddle
If you have the broken spoke including the nipple, you can measure the two parts. Easiest thing is to take the broken spoke parts to a bike shop and try and get a match, but sounds like you're not so keen on them.

Chances are you'll have more go - so I'd either learn how to replace them yourself - it sounds as though that's what you intend to do - or get the wheel rebuilt with quality stainless steel spokes.

The Wheels are Cole Rollen Elite on my BH carbon . They are blade spokes . I cobbed the broken one away . Evans sell them , but I will contact a Cole dist’r
but there does seem to be a lot of differing lengths , so if I measure from center of bend to underside rim would someone be able to determine correct length,

Evans have replacement spokes. Drop them an email/phone call, they'll probably be able to help you source a replacement. For what it's worth, the spokes pictured are Pillar spokes. Although, it may just be a generic image. Dependent on spoke length, you may get away with one of the front wheel spokes they have in stock @ 281 and 2812mm.

Cheers @migrantwing , I have seen those on Evans site, I need a drive side , they have sold out of them , I am not sure what the difference is other than length , also it does appear that Cole have gone awol ? so may have a problem , I may need to take it to a specialist wheel builder to see if they can do anything , bit annoying really ,I miss judged A swerve and the back wheel hit a grid and that was it , I’ll check out web and see if I can sort it ,

Easiest way to find out the correct length is to remove its opposite (rear drive side) and measure that.
why not try taking another spoke out from the same side to measure
TMN to me please.
Afaics the OP doesn't need a matching spoke. Just get a 'normal' double butted from an LBS (who will stock a range of lengths), fit it and ride, pending the OP finding the 'right' (matching colour and blade profile) spoke.
