Had to kill time in central London recently so thought I would go and have a look in Lilleywhites in Picadilly Circus. When I was a kid this was the sports shop dreams were made of. Now it's a dump as its been taken over by Sports Direct. I did get one of the MF ladies cycling tops but its only lasted a few months.

TBH i found the tenn shorts as bad as sports direct but maybe it was a one off, way too tight around the thighs even though i went a size up and the pad was woefully thin.
Aldi /lidl have stuff in about 2 times a year so sign up for their email alerts for the weekly specials to get a few days head start as once its gone its gone.
If you do not like lycra maybe look padded shorts with MTB style baggies over the top ?

I bought some Tenn shorts the race ones not the cheapest, and the pad was very poor and the sizing was way off. Decathlon are far better.

+1 for Tenn but try here first. They sell Tenn gear but cheaper plus it isn't 2nd's (as far as I can see). Their pads are a little thin for any long distance rides but I haven't had their pro shorts.
As for lycra. How old are you? When I was in my 20's I did more offroading so didn't look at lycra. In my 30's/40's I had some lycra shorts but was a little too self concious to wear them. Now I'm mid (well actually late) 50's I don't care less and go out in bib shorts and lycra tops whenever.
If you've got it flaunt it. If you haven't got it no one will be looking so don't worry. If you got a decent bike everyone will be looking at that first. I'm of an age when if I see an attractive lady on a bike I check out the bike first :becool:.

Depends how fat your fat arse is!! Lol

I'm a big lad who was wearing Muddy Fox shorts (xxxl) for up to 50 mile rides are they were fine apart from the non existent draw strings.

I've since moved on to DHB bib shorts in XXL and they are far better. Thinner materiel and my arse doesn't hand out of them. Worth the extra £15ish.

The Muddy Fox tops are decent but uninspiring. They come in big sizes which is a plus, but the colours are garish!!

The MF rain coats are like wearing bin liners, don't buy one.

The MF stuff is cheap enough to try and bin if you don't like it so give it a go.

again, stunned by the volume of friendly replies to my query. Joffey mate, I really appreciate your honest and heart felt review, I know where you are coming from.
Wilkie, thanks for your advice, I agree with the buy cheap, buy twice thing. That said, my wife bought me a pair of the MFX baggy shorts today and to be honest they seem ok. Any padding is preferable to none. I've developed two distinct tender and painful areas around the nether regions, one either side of...... well, I'm sure I don't need me to be too graphic as you've probably all suffered that same dull, thudding ache. Anyway, as I said, I now have some padding, so roll on tomorrow so I can give them a blast. If they're poor then I may have to resort to sponges, elastoplast and vaseline:stop:. Now there's a sobering thoughtxx(.
For the sake of common decency, not to mention my backside, lets hope they offer some padding where needed.

thanks again,

Mick

Aldi at Cowgate still had loads of bike gear last week - trousers, commuting shorts - I don't think any of the shorts were padded but some decent cheap gear for starting out. There will probably be plenty of gear at the Pelaw Aldi.
I just hate buying from Sports Direct, us folk north of the river have a football club that's being ruined by Ashley.

having just got my fat backside back in the saddle after a long absence. I noticed that Sports Direct are selling "Muddy Fox" cycling gear. In particular, I was looking at the waterproof outer and the baggy, padded shorts. I'd love to hear people's views on this gear, in particular the items mentioned above. I know Sports Direct have a habit of buying up companies and producing sub standard gear at "knock down" prices, to an unsuspecting public.
I trawled the first 4 pages of this section but couldn't find a similar thread, please forgive me if there is. Just clip me round the ear and point me in the right direction.

Thanks, in advance,

Mick
it's rubbish - simple! Look elsewhere for good value 'cheap' kit.

How far are you cycling? Have you lubed up?

Cheers Puffinbilly, I'll pop down Pelaw tomorrow if I get a chance.
"Lubed up?" The temptation for innuendo is almost too much. I'm not lubed up or at least I don't think I am and I'm only cycling very short distance at the minute.
Regarding my new MFX shorts, its difficult to give a fair appraisal of their performance as I have nothing to compare them to/ with. I can say with a degree of certainty that some padding is far preferable to none. I'm sure they are more economy class than club class but when you've been strapped to the wing with gaffer tape, economy class seems like luxury.
I've just chucked them in the wash for tomorrow's outing so this could be a bit of a test of their resilience.
