Sports/Events worth watching live?

I have friends and family who recommend moto gp but it'll have to wait a few years until the kids are older. One colleague went to Barcelona to watch it this year. I've been to athletics meetings as a kid and enjoyed it but that's only of interest if you like the sport. Live boxing is a good night out if you like that sort of thing.I went to see a world title fight last year which was great. The atmosphere was superb. It helps if you don't need to drive as drinking is allowed.

Stand-up comedy at a good local comedy club. It can be it and miss but I've laughed until my stomach hurt (whilst sober I might add) on a few occasions. Much better than on the telly.

Noodley, keep an eye open for the Tour of Britain, there's bound to be one day when it's within your reach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this comment will be heresy on a cycle forum, but I think road racing, that is not circuit based, is pretty boring. Having been to watch a number of races and I was on Ventoux this July, the carnival atmosphere can be good, but there is not much racing to actually watch.

Try your local speedway team meeting (new season starts in march)

You're close to the action, four guys doing 90+ MPH on 500cc bikes with no brakes on an oval track, you can't beat it for thrills and spills ;)

Good shout. ;)
Knockhill isn't too far away from me, I'll check out next year's calendar.
+1 for a decent race, e.g. BTCC. You don't get the smell on TV, and don't get to see the nutters at the back much.

However remember that watching motor racing when it is cold is very cold, and when it is sunny (or even quite cloudy), wear sunscreen, as there is a serious risk of sun burn (yes, even in Scotland).

A word of caution, Noodles, wear a heavy disguise if you choose to watch the girls' netball at the local college;)

2020 cricket is quite good fun, motorsport is ok but you miss loads much better on tv. i would love to get to a rugby match esp international

Eh? Depends where you're sat but you're aware of far more stuff at the track than you are on tv. Much, much more aware.

well you cannot see the overtakes on corners the far side of the track, at best you can see a couple of corners, not saying i dont enjoy it, but i feel its better on tv

The F1, Rally GB, a good test match (ashes if possible) and the Grand national are some of the best imo!

Nope not if you sit in a good stand, such as luffield at Silverstone, or a decent corner at the Rally etc.
I agree the Rugby is good, but i prefer going to local games (Northampton Saints) instead of internationals, unless it's a big game like six nations etc.

Ah, Franklin's Gardens - the second best place to watch club rugby in the UK. OK, maybe third behind Bath.
Unfortunately club rugby in Scotland isn't that inspiring in the Fife area. The local Magners club is Edinburgh, who play at Murrayfield in front of a few thousand tucked in the stand furthest from the playing area. Club rugby is a lot more basic, and is concentrated in Edinburgh and the Borders, so wrong side of the river.

Agree regarding the motorsport. TV is so sterile - live there are the smells and sounds that just don't come into the living room.

Yes, the atmosphere at the Gardens is amazing, the planned extensions should improve it further, i think we could pull the crowds Leicester does if there were the space! At the moment it's around 13,500 per game, 17,000 isn't an unreasonable target!
