Sports tough guys (and gals)

Brian Close wore batting gloves - the wuss!
Gaelic players are also just a tad padded up, albeit with helmets. Rugby Football players are snuggled in a bit too...not so apparent in League.
I suppose 'tough' relates to those who operate and make decisions/win/compete while their bodies are being physically taxed to the limit, or very near.

They are supremely fit, I know having been involved, but they often out climb a cyclist and it isn't just about legs either, their upper bodies are also very strong. It's a great watch over the winter if you have Eurosport, and the Biathlon.

Ole Einar Bjoerdalen was one of my fave athletes in anything (he's a biathlete for those who don't know). they are tough, physically, but i'd still pick a cyclist over any athlete for toughness in the face of injury. there's not many sports where a participant breaks bones and gets back up to finish the game/race as many cyclists have done.

Ian Botham tells a story about Brian Close when he played with him at Somerset.

Close as captain was known for using very aggressive field placing with lots of fielders close to the bat. He did not shirk the responsibility and often put himself in the most dangerous positions.
On one occasion when fielding a matter of feet from the bat, the batsman hit a huge drive from the middle of the bat that Close couldn't get out of the way of. It hit him in the middle of the shin (no shin pads!) and apparently the 'crack' could be heard around the ground.
Close refused to go off, or even to sit down, and it was only when they walked off for tea many minutes later did the other players notice the blood dripping out of the eyelets of his cricket boots.......

I disagree, the injuries-breaks which allow a cyclist to continue wouldn't be possible in other sports, which shows how much of the strain is taken by the bike, so maybe football isn't so "wussy" as those similar injuries-breaks would make it impossible to play....

footballers only have to sneeze to need a doctor to attend to them. they are pathetic... no, won't say it.
