It's accessories buying time for me and the wife. We are looking for mudguards for our hybrids and have been told by LBS the full fender types are more affective than the 'tail' looking ones, however, the wife doesn't want to look like an "old dear" riding her bike.... lol. Soooo the question is; are there any really good, really affective, sporty tail like mudguards out there that you folks would recommend for my 'young dear'? :-)

It will depend what clearance there is on the bike - on my Triban there is limited clearance so I was using the Crud Road Racer types, which are ok but they do rub a bit and it takes a wee bit of adjusting to get them right. Was considering getting the SKS Raceblades for this winter as they are easily removed leaving just the clip in place - and they look a bit sturdier too. Post up the bike make/model and someone should be able to recommend what fits.

I am quite happy to look like an old dear to keep myself and bike reasonably clean and dry so I fitted the SKS Chromoplastics. I don't think they look too bad on my hybrid. I have left a bit of extra clearance in case I wanted to revert to wider tyres at some point.

Whyte do branded mudguards that I'd be happily going for had I got one of their bikes http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/whyte-mudguards

I've had mudguards fitted to my Specialized Sirrus for the 5 years and don't feel it looks like an 'old dear' bike and got some new guards on order to fit to my new road bike! Already tried a set of Crud Roadracer Mk2 and didn't get on with them so going for the SKS Chromoplastics.

Are you likely to be cycling behind her? I'm not sure I would if she had a 'tail' mudguard and it was wet ;)

Haha. No I should be in front most of the time... I like the Whyte branded ones myself and will be buying those for my bike. I will try to convince her, if not she will have to get wet is all ^_^

Get her a cheap crappy 'tail' guard then, when she realises that's no good you can break out the Whyte branded proper guards ;)

Do what I do, put mud guards on your most expensive bike and claim it's just your winter hack.
To be honest black fitted guards don't really stand out against tyres, just think of it as getting the audax look

She says she is going to try it with out the mudguards for a while.... I just laughed.

I will have cheap 'tail' ones on standby for her.... She will probably change her mind when she sees the Whyte mudguards on my bike.

I have Chromoplastics on one of my bikes, the Dew Drop and slightly longer and a pair of probably more 'old dear' SKS Longboards on my hybrid. They both work perfectly well and look okay to me. Keeps the bike and me cleaner and certainly drier than without.

There's the Longboards on my own Hybrid. They look far from sporty but are very much set and forget in relation to putting them on. Very good coverage too. Gez

I bet they are! The front fender is only a few inches from the ground!

It makes sense though, in this country at least. Are the Chromoplastics much shorter than the Longboards?

Yeah quite a bit shorter to be honest but they too look okay once on. With the Longboards you just need to remember not to catch them on steps and stuff but that's not a major problem, the flaps are rubbery and very flexible.
