SRAM Apex - how to replace gear cable in the left shifter.

My birthday is coming up and as I've been given some money I've decided to replace the distinctly average Microshift front derailleur with the SRAM Apex one on my Boardman CX. I can fit that easily enough however the gear change cable is distinctly frayed at the mech end so I'm goinng to replace it before it fails.

Took the hood off the left shifter last night and located the cable for the gear shifter. I couldn't for the life of me find the end point. Does anyone have links to a video or just general advice on how to change these things. The only instructions I've foudn so far have been the official SRAM ones which are next to useless.

Cheers!!!

PS. Before anyone says anything - yes I could take it to the LBS but where's the fun in that!?!?!

Have found an article that seems to make sense so will have another look tonight. Any advice still welcome though!

I only have a 4 year old Rival version - on this you lift the back of the hood. There are some cut-outs in the plastic and you can see the cable drum inside.

If you can't see the cable nipple then give the lever a few clicks to bring it round and in full view.

OK - that was easy! It was harder getting the old frayed cable out than putting the new one in.
Squirted some GT85 into the housing in the shifter, then rubbed the cable with GT 85 and in it went. I did have to pull back some of the bar tape to thread the cable into the right channel on top of the shifter but after that - easy!

Also I now see what people mean about Microtec front mechs. Put an SRAM Apex one on yesterday (on the Boardman CX). No more chain throws and smoother shifting.
