Used to keep one at a relatives, in a homemade bag,

I genuinely read this as "used to keep one of the relatives in a homemade bag...."

I must pay closer attention to all the words, and not just skim read.........

I keep a few of mine in the loft. It is because I have no room in the house and I can't think of getting rid. Up there at the moment we have:

1. Gazelle TT bike with twin discs (diff sizes) and back killing frame, (1980s) with full Mavic group.
2. Mike Kowall fixed.
3. Alan with classic Campagnolo and Suntour Superbe Pro.
4. Dawes Edge frame set.
5. Steve Potts Cross Country Racer frame that has ever been built up.

They don't seem to come to any harm. I need to take the wheels off and remove saddle and post. I also have a tall, strong and forgiving wife!

Lofts are for building spare rooms in. After my parents died, my sisters and I were getting the old family house ready to sell. We found 50+ years worth of accumulated stuff in the loft that had been put up there for 'temporary' storage!

Have you got an expanse of wall that could be used to store the bike above the other one?

I have a big cellar that I would love to use to store my bikes but the stairs are steep and it a bit tight getting them round the corner to the door at the top of those stairs. I think I could get the bikes safely up and down the stairs if I rigged up something like a ski chair lift though!

Attics can get quite humid thanks to clothes drying, showers and cooking downstairs. I wouldn't put a bike up there.

Never put anything in the loft. It will still be gathering dust up there when you're gathering worms, Slomo.
Thanks for the momento mori.

The bike in the loft will get used. It's got a triple on the front and is the only way I can get up steep hills.

If it's a nice look bike i would strip it, put everything in the loft apart from the frame, then hang it on the wall like a lovely piece or art ;-)
