Coffee stop today. I think I had my sunny coffee top left.
An inspiring place and quite unique. I wonder if the blurb 'worlds biggest' still stands.

I don't think it does stand, it's carved out of the ground you see!

A retired estate agent once told me a big cause for Morecambe's demise. The had a modest holiday sector but sometime in the 60s they started work on Heysham power station. A lot of accommodation was needed and the contractors got paid well to find it. That meant a lot of holiday accommodation such as guest houses and B&Bs simply took the contractors' year round guaranteed money. Then Heysham 2 was built.

It was finished and the need reduced so the guest house owners were desperate and their old regulars simply stopped coming. They ended up taking on DSS money and the once nice west end near the Battery went right downhill. Then the influx of Eastern Europeans came over to work, mostly Polish because Lancaster had a Polish community from before WWII. They moved into West End for Cheap accommodation leaving more spate cash for sending home. Then a lot of them moved out of West End because it's basically insert rude word ending in tty.

Before that last bit happened, about 25 years ago, you could practically buy a whole street for £50! I saw a 9 bed house for sale that was a bit expensive at £15k. Mind you you'd have to get specialist cleaners in on account of all the needles, and human bodily fluids / waste products.

Now there's probably going to be a mini boom with the building of the Eden of the North. I know Lancaster University is involved in that as an education partner. They've had a lot of state funding for research and development of the educational package linked with that. I reckon the state will put a decent amount of development money into the area on the back of it. Unless they mess the deal up of course.

Yes, Heysham village and Morecambe Town. Separate but Morecambe was where contractors stayed when building the PS.

Nothing sells Heysham village better than the annual supply of emergency, nuclear fallout medication and guidance on what to do when things go wrong with the locals neighbours!
