I went out on my Pompino the otherday I forgot what a beautiful sublime ride it is. Even with tyres at 100psi it is more comfortable than my daily commute MTB with fat tyres and a brooks saddle with springs.

This made me want a geared road bike made from steel. On-one do a nice one with hub gear and disk brakes for about 900, but what other steel framed road bikes are there? (Don't want carbon or alu)

The Condor Fratello is a very nice steel road bike, I'm not sure of the price though.

You can pick up a 2011 Charge Juicer Mid for £600 off Wiggle at the moment. The 2012 model however has worse specs, and too much brown, be warned. Last year's high model is also going for just under £800, that'll get you 105 groupset rather than Tiagra.

Last year's Mixer 8 (more of a hybrid tho) is £650 on there too (but large is sold out now), but its got disc brakes, 8 speed Alfine, flat bar as opposed to drops and its pretty heavy. Damn knew I shouldn't have gone bike shopping, half tempted at getting one now.

I alternate between a Pompino and a Pompetamine, which both live in my hallway. Non cycling visitors often ask me why I've got two bikes the same^_^

The On-One/Planet-X 'new' Kaffenback is currently around £1200.
I've been thinking about getting one, or just get the frame+forks+wheels and build it up with spare parts. And possibly go for a more heavy-duty, 8 speed drivetrain.

The Dawes Clubman and Dawes Century SE both fit the bill, though the 2012 colours aren't quite as nice as last year's.

Another very happy long distance commuter on a Pompetamine here, but moving to RibMo tyres at 115psi is great for handling (not in the wet) but rubbish for comfort

+1 on the Dawes century se. Been riding mine since the new year and loving it. Replaced my classic 531 that got totalled in a SMIDSY at Christmas
