Just rode back from Munster via Hook of Holland and can't recommend Stena line more highly. Very efficient (even the check in). We took the overnight and got the cheapest inside cabin and while (expectedly small), it was clean and comfortable.

Just done Birkenhead - Belfast with them and was also impressed. We booked a cabin on the (overnight) journey out but not for the (day) return. However at check in coming home, they offered us a cabin for £20 as they had loads spare, which we took, because 8 hours is a long time to hang about and I fancied a nap. They upgraded us to a premium cabin - which as far as I could tell was identical to the normal one we had on the way out, but the carpet outside was different and inside it had one of those capsule coffee machines (which made coffee that smelled off so I bought one instead) and some biscuits (which were very nice).

Having a cabin on the way back was ace - well worth £20 to have somewhere to nap / watch the Olympics in peace. Even the food was better value than I was expecting. Not cheap, but not a complete rip-off either.

We've often gone for the day cabin option where the route offers an over-night option, and therefore plenty are available. With a family, it provides personal space. Otherwise, a place to rest and nap in peace. And as you say, they are not much required on day services, so you can get them really cheap.

We've just come back via the Hook of Holland Stena ferry, and noticed a lot of cyclists as well as motorbikes on the ferry. All seemed to be very happy with the service.

I've nothing but good things to say for Stena when we've taken the bikes from Belfast to Birkenhead. Last time the tandems even enjoyed a trip in the captains office - safe and secure. They've always been very accommodating, even when i remarked how uncomfortable the Hygge lounge was on the way over (not complaining or expecting anything) and they upgraded me to the executive lounge with free food and drinks. It's proper comfy in there!

I thought the Hygge was for sleeping in overnight. Can you sleep in the other lounge or do they close it?

You can stay in either lounge all night. The Hygge seats are fixed so are very uncomfortable to sit in after a few hours and nearly impossible to sleep on - and believe me, I can generally sleep on anything! The plus lounge is far better in every way, although I left my recliner and ended up sleeping at one of the tables for a fully horizontal snooze.
