Assuming the rear mech is not an ancient pre-index one you need STI's of the same speed and the same make as the bar ends and it will be fine.

Sti shifters mount on the handlebars?
I think the OP means the shifters that mount on the handlebar near the stem , look like rockers.

I have shifters like this in the pic above and want to upgrade to sti shifters
depends on how much you want to spend, new shifters+ cables are not going to leave much change from £90 (ish ) new .
I think you can use 8 speed as the spacing is close enough with an extra click unused .
Might be worth considering selling your bike and getting a second hand bike with sti ?
