When i was riding today both legs started to get quite stiff behing my knees top outside calf area.

I actually had similar in my left leg last summer and it got so bad during a ride i couldn't push down on the pedal or walk up, down stairs post ride.
Had to get the mrs to pick me up a few rides after before quitting for the year, just as i was getting into some good miles.

I had it today in both legs but it didn't get so bad it stoped me, luckily the last stretch was flat so didnt have to put much effort in.

Any ideas what can cause this?
Its the outside top of calf area, that gets painfull.

I ride flat pedals and not interested in going clipless at mo, i use asics running shoes, maybe a shoe with a stiffer sole?

Saddle too low? Wrong position?

Are your calves tight and need a good stretch and foam roll? What about the rest of you leg muscles, hamstrings, glutes?

First thing to check is saddle height - heel on pedal, leg straight, but relaxed is a good starting point to check. Flat pedals and flat shoes shouldn't really make a difference, though different shoes may make a small difference.

Saddle is set fine, VERY slighty low but thats how i like it.
Yep pretty much all them areas are probably tight, i do stretch a couple times a week for 20/30mins and as a cool down on weight training days for 5min
Im more stretchy than average joe but as i drive upto a 1000 miles a week they are probably still pretty tight.

I alreay thought ill do 10mins foam rolling followed by calf, ham, thigh, glute stretching for 10mins.

Sounds like either bursitis or sore tendons. Have you tried rubbing Ibuprofen gel into the area twice a day?

Im wondering if it could be tight hams due to driving job and sitting alot, went for a ride today very low intensity and can feel stiffness behind my knees again.
Lowered saddle a few mm so ill see how that goes but it was on the low side anyway
