Stinky cycle kit barred from residents

If I can smell it then visitors must

Main offenders are in order of smell rank

No-1: Carradice Kendal panniers

Probably about 15 years old, unwashable, get used on a daily basis

Been used as work, so carried dirty work clothes, touring over Europe, camping, alcohol to name a few

No-2 North Wave MTB shoes

About 2 years old and get used on a daily basis :/

No-3 Sealsinnz cycling gloves

About 1 year old

Despite washing these on a regular basis they still stink

So this kit is confined to my veranda

If possible, stick the panniers etc in your freezer with bicarbonate of (baking) soda. It will kill the bacteria. I did it with my Northwave boots.

Bicarb can be picked up in Wilkinsons.

I will have to try that on my cycling shoes!

I can say with absolute conviction that you should never use cheap aftershave for masking the stink of rank cycling shoes ... I never use the stuff, but I was given some a few years ago so it was left on a shelf somewhere and forgotten about. I was getting ready for a forum ride in early 2012 and noticed how pongy my shoes were and in a moment of madness sprinkled the aftershave liberally in both shoes. Two years on, they still reek of the stuff!

My seal skinz gloves stink too. Despite regular washing.
I dont like wearing them in temps above 5c as my hands sweat too much. They are just too warm.

I once bought a Honda 75 to learn on so that I could pass my motorbike test. In those days it was just a few turns round the block, but you had to turn up on something and the Honda was cheap and reliable. On my last practice run to work I bought a pound of fresh sprats, which I left in the top box ... until I came to sell the Honda four months later when I got my full licence.

How about using the neutradol powder stuff for carpets? It seems to stop bins from stinking so I'd imagine a few panniers shouldn't be too much. Otherwise febreze seems to be effective.

One of my sets of SPD shoes smelt the same. I put the footbeds in the washing machine which seemed to improve things

Wash the shoes twice yearly. Once early summer and once late summer. Leave them soaked overnight in some clothing detergent and hang up to dry the next couple of days.

If I leave my winter jersey in the kitchen when cooking it smells of meat pies!!! Doesn't matter what we cook...still the old familiar meat pie smell!

Once with some smelly gloves I used the Wife's hair shampoo and it got rid of the smell!.................................she was not amused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
