got stopped by the police today. thought I had done something wrong but it was just to give me one of those pens that you need ultra violet light to see and some security coded stickers. She told me they have loads of bikes going to auction because they can't trace the owners

round here they don't try very hard. even when the chuffin' postcode is written on the frame using a special pen. and the details stored in one of the online databases.

the official response to a cycle forum member's outrage was "it's a low priority task."

my mate got a 2014 cube acid from a police auction for £200! it was literally brand new tires looked like they had only been down the street and back... If you get to go to one they are well worth a trip, its saddening how many bikes they actually get that can't returned to their owner

I happen to know where North Yorkshire Police and Durham send their stolen/recovered untraceable bikes to. Ideal place to keep an eye out for bargains. Trouble is that the really good stuff goes for far too much. Example: a 3 year old CF named brand bike(can't remember the make/model), with a spare set of wheels, which would have been £999 when new (plus, maybe £200 for the wheels), well used (plenty of stone chips) but obviously looked after, went for £800!!!!

guess it depends on the audience present at each auction sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don't

Indeed, and it was how I managed to "steal" a Dave Yates for a miserly sum a couple of years ago.

It was too small for me, though, so ended up being sold.
