I got a bollocking off of the constabulary a couple of weeks back. 56 mph in a 40 limit. I played all innocent "no speedo" and all that. They didn't give me a special pen either.

Wasn't exactly stopped by the police but was cycling along and they pointed a speed gun at me. I asked if I was going too fast, they said no FFS speed up!

I prefer 22 x 42 . My joints are excellent. I don't do speed.

What happens to the proceeds of the bikes that are auctioned? It wouldn't surprise me if they went into police coffers.

i think the police force do take the money, then probably tell you its put back into community projects... that's just my speculation though lol

I had one policeman mutter something about jotting down my frame number after he pointed a speed gun at me. I know I was not going very fast but I surely wasn't going that slowly

I've got the hills around where I'm based to get 100Kmh (60 odd mph) on the descents, weather permitting, and with the right bike set up. Loads of guys round here get those sorts of speeds as well. It's seen as a badge of honour to get a talking to 
. There's a new law of unauthorised racing now though
. I always preferred "wanton and furious cycling" personally. It's an on the spot 80 quid fine apparently. Although I'm assured it would have to be a slow news day for them to actually fine you. Either that or you'd have to be doing it past a school at chucking out time, or in heavy traffic (which would be an achievement).

A few years ago I had a bike in for a repair and had a all from teh shop saying they had a problem.
Someone had been passing and claimed that my bike was theirs , it was stolen a few weeks previously and they wanted to reclaim it.
Shop had refused to hand it over and contacted the Police
The Police asked if when I went back I could provide proof that I owned the bike.
I couldn't!
I had to go home and even then pulling out receipts on a bike that had been bought as a frame and built up from scratch that proved inconclusive ownership was difficult
As it was once the Police were involved the claimant disappeared - apparently it is a scam in the hopes the bike will be handed over!
However one thing the Police would NOT accept was the frame number independently as it is easy enough to obtain.
Spot a bike in the street and it is a few seconds work to obtain the number.
Well you would think getting your bike logged would be easy. We had a green day at work with cycling, green power, recycling etc and one of the stalls was the local police. That day my bike was at home as had to wear a suit so got the bus in. Nice chap said we can arrange for the bear PCSO to pop to your house and do the special stickers, something about a carbon frame and get it on the bike register.
They failed to turn up twice and now haven't even returned my calls. It seems Avon and Somerset really don't have that much focus on bike theft despite Bristol having a huge theft problem.

What a helpful post!!!! I never new this site existed, been meaning to write down frame number for ages.... Just registered uploaded a photo and frame number... Cheers @Drago

I've had my road bike frame covered in alpha dots, marked with hidden plates and registered. The problem still remains though, if the bike isn't found, it counts for nothing.
