I lived though the hurricane that Michael Fish didn't quite predict.

Now that was a proper bit of wind!!

The Snake Pass is one of the most "closed for snow" roads in England and I can see it fro my house. It just seems like a normal winter storm to me

It's raining and windy. It isn't going to snow today. The good news is I have a birthday voucher for the local beer shop so I'll pop down later today and make some purchases

Pretty blowy here. My rotten back gates have already fallen victim, bringing forward my plans to replace them. There were two trees down in the park and when the third one came down next to me and the dog, I decided it was time to go home and drink coffee.

You may or may not have mentioned it but Happy Birthday (belated)

Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted
Very wet and windy here, most of the bins are blown over - luckily they were emptied earlier, could have been a fox's / rat's dream otherwise. BBC website weather page predicts the peak between 12 and 1 with wind speeds of 60+mph, and getting back to a mere 20 mph from about 5.

It's good to read in the newspaper today of the fast reaction following the failure to accurately assess the timing, direction and severity of storm Doris, I quote......

The appointment of Cressida Dick as the first woman to run the Met is the lead in the Guardian.

As I said, lots of people don't seem to understand what weather forecasts are...
I recently watched a very interesting 3-part series about weather forecasting which explained how it used to be done and why that led to blunders like the infamous Fish 'no hurricane' forecast.

The final episode explained how these days the Met Office actually generate 50 forecasts from slightly varying initial data to try to get a feel for how sensitive their calculations are to error. If the spread of results is large then they would issue a forecast of changeable conditions and predict how likely different scenarios are. If most of the 50 forecast runs agree, then a fairly strong prediction will be made.

It was interesting to hear that they ran such a series of forecasts on the data available on Fish hurricane day and ... the calculations largely supported what Fish said that day. BUT ... a small number of the forecasts DID predict a hurricane! Nowadays, he would say that conditions exist that COULD produce a hurricane over southern England. It was not likely, but if it happened it would be devastating so watch for weather updates and be prepared.

And as for today's forecast. The Met Office were saying several days ago that we would probably have severe winds and we have ... severe winds! The wind is actually finding a way into my house despite all the doors and windows being shut. When I hear a howling, rumbling and clattering from outside, a sudden draught blows through the building.
