If motorists created a website which encouraged each other to complete a section of road faster than someone else the press would have a field day.

strava should be treated and viewed in the same way IMHO.

I'm sure a time will come when a motorist has a coming together with a cyclist and uses strava as evidence to suggest the rider was being reckless

The problem is the difference in speed and perception of danger that brings.

A cyclist passing at 25 - 30 mph on a path likethis is of sufficient difference to a pedestrian speed of 2-3 mph to perceive the speed as dangerous

Personally I have no problem with the idiots who race on these shared use facilities being criticised or even prosecuted.
It is no different to a driver speeding in a residential area

I use Strava, but all the segments I have created are uphill, thereby making the speed on them slower. Also there is little training benefit to riding fast downhill compared to doing it the other way round. I just ride my local rides and if I improve then so be it. I certainly don't know where other riders created segments begin, so have no idea when to 'attack', and certainly don't think blasting downhill at 40mph + on a touring bike with a cotton cap is a good idea, I'll roll down at 20 ish and carry on with my gentlemanly journey.

I'm not a racer, and believe anyone trying to bag strava KOM's at the expense of ped/other cyclist's safety should join a local club (and get put in their place)

I know how frustrating it is when you're trying to make a quick average speed and something or person interrupts that speed but as said above we must be aware of other people when we ride and I can see the point about Strava!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can we not have a "King of the Muppets" award on Strava

This can then be awarded to those who exceed reasonable speeds (12 -15 mph max?) on shared use paths.
I don't use Strava, but I thought it already had a feature for flagging inappropriate segments. If someone is going too fast for the conditions on a shared path, this should be obvious in the segment's leaderboard, correct?

Is this the segment in question? http://www.strava.com/segments/1606888

I dont know the route but IMO "strava racing" on it doesnt look like much of a problem. There are only 2 riders over 18 mph (or 17mph for that matter)...that does not strike me as being excessively fast.

On a stretch of cyclepath near me i'll be mid 20s if conditions allow. If it is busy then obviously i'll go a fair bit slower but a "speed limit" of 13-15mph would be ridiculous most of the time and a deterrent for many cyclists (either commuting, training or for leisure rides) using the cyclepath at all never mind moderating the speed.

You can only segments rides you have actually ridden, though I expect if you used reported via their help desk http://strava.zendesk.com you'd probably get a response. They renamed a segment within a couple of days when I complained of racism.

Not actually true. It's very easy to fake a segment using other GPS programs like RideWithGPS. Which comes in handy for actually flagging shared use paths as hazardous, so that anyone dumb enough to be speeding on them can't claim the segment.

So agree with this - my riding buddy is OBSESSED with making his bike lightr and faster etc etc etc and is always on about strava. When i suggest he join a club or go racing he shy's away saying he prefers just going out with me. We are both in our 40's so he would soon see he isn't that fast against real racers

Was just thinking the same thing, but then I upload my rides to Strava just for information and it obviously automatically does this segment thing. As I am relatively new to cycling, I am getting PRs all the time, but I am not trying specifically to beat these, it's just as I get a faster average (say from 12 to 13) it naturally happens!

I see a lot of segments on my local loops that include stretches with two, three or more sets of lights - I do wonder does this imply that such lights are ignored if they turn red!?
