I received a great reply from RwGPS. Here was the answer to my question. My main problem was not knowing their were many map styles. Once I found the right map, it worked perfectly. Great and fast response from RwGPS! Sharing in case it will help anyone else http://ridewithgps.com/help/switching-map-styles
Glad you sorted it, should have thought about that, I tend to just use the one so forget, however there is a right junction I take, which is legal no sign saying no right turn, but rwgps mapping always wants to take me to the mini-roundabout about 50yrds further on to turn round.

So, what gives with this?

I rode a 62.9km route today, recording it on my phone using RWGPS. The elevation gain according to the RWGPS app was 757m. I uploaded it to Strava later and according to them the elevation gain was 564m, a difference of 193m (or 25% less).

What the what??

You're lucky Strava regularly nicks a third of my elevation, it's because Strava smooths the data, so if you do a rolling route (like I do) then you lose shed loads of elevation. If I upload the tcx file I get the correct elevation, but the distance and time then cock up!

You really need a unit with a barometric unit on it, notable garmin 500 up, or the 705, 605 I think, though these are older units and can only be got second hand (usually), though my 705 has a habit of c****** up especially if the Bryton R20 f's up to, like today, bryton units, I know if Iload the same ride as tcx from the bryton unit as @Supersuperleeds says its loses loads, not sure on the higher models, I know the site has an upload to strava option but it doesn't always work not Brytons fault, but more to do with changes at strava, I can't remember my R35 to well.

This was my planned route http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7234161
this is the revised route http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7234161 with 46.7 miles and 1818, the file I corrected has 1981ft elev and corrected 2101ft http://ridewithgps.com/trips/4248774
the same file on strava has 2212ft (and we all know not to correct it on strava) https://www.strava.com/activities/270847595 my avg sp. cad hr ect are about right the only thing that might be a bit iffy are the p.b.'s between 24 and 34 miles into the ride, though they might not be to far out as I was pushing a bit, still haven't figured out how the V.P. kept on track, who I did catch prior to Knottingley, where I stopped at my mates, which isn't recorded.

Damned if I was losing all that elevation and distance, because a machine packed up recording the gps plots.

thinking of signing up to ridewithgps so as to be able to get turn by turn directions on Wahoo RFLKT+
Is anyone doing this yet?
Is it easy to upload a ride recorded on RWGPS to Strava?

I usually map with rwgps, export as a tcx course file this has turn by turn,I can also download a gpx as the 705 converts this to a true turn by turn with advanced warnings, the tcx I correct the speed in TCX converter to something I might be able to maintain, not car speeds, then load that to the unit, this is why garmins (and maybe others) are so good, as the unit is seen as an external device, and you can drag and drop to the relevant folders.
