My son has this app on his Iphone and used it for the first time on our Tuesday night ride, we noticed that on one segment of the route, he was 30th in the top speed list with 27.8 mph with the leader at over 40mph... In Norwich we have a fairly steep hill called Ketts hill and I just managed to hit 41.1 mph going down there ... my legs couldn't peddle any faster, yet this guy whoever he is, has done this on a flat stretch of road !..... .Am I missing something here?

1. is it possible to do 40+mph on the flat ?
2. what's to stop someone doing it in a car?....are all cyclists really that honest:rolleyes:

A good sprinter could sustain over 40 mph for a short period, or if you draft a motor vehicle.

Yes you could use a car and people sometimes forget their Garmin is on when they put the bike on the car. However it is normally apparent due to very high average speeds, low heart rates etc. People then flag the ride and it is removed.

I was watching the vuelta yesterday and they were doing about 67 kmh for the last few km, it was both small up and down hill sections. So yes, it is possible.

Yes 40mph is possible on a flat, but you'd have to be going for it and couldn't hold it for long! I could reach the low thirties for a few seconds, and I'm nowhere near the level of competitive riders!

You can flag rides on Strava if you think they are bogus, but I've not seen any personally near me which make me call shenanigans.
