The only thing I use it for is seeing where friends have been riding and allowing them to see where I've been. Sometimes you see a ride or tour that interests you and you can ask a friend to share a GPX of it, so you can repeat it. I am not interested in the other features, and so Premium makes no sense for me.

No way! I used to subscribe when it was around £18 but its current level, they are having a laugh.

I used it free for about a decade before deciding I’d like them to continue in business and chucking them a few quid.

This is a good reason.
I do the same with RideWithGPS - similar service, same principle. I use it a lot and I think the subscription is worth it.
If I used Strava instead there's a fair chance I might do the same.

I wasn't a subscriber, but since Rouvy offered Strava Segments on virtual routes, I decided to give it a try, but it's only available to users with a premium account. Back then there was a promotion for 60 days free (don't know if they still offer it), so I went for it and have been subscribed ever since.

Think perhaps the headline "double the price" is misleading.
