I thought I would stick this here rather than start a new thread. Strava is now telling me one of my devices will no longer be compatible with their app. Given I only have it on my phone which is an ancient IPhone.
So as well try to constantly trying to sell me a subscription they now want me to buy a new phone.😱

You don't pay for Strava but expect the company to ensure their product continues to work on your ancient iPhone. If you paid for the product you would have a point. However, you don't pay or have a point.
Why should subscribers' cash go towards supporting those who want a freebie on old tech?

Because without the free subscribers Strava would die as a platform.
Strava wouldn’t survive without those of us who have purchased a GPS computer. Which was very clear when they threatened legal action against those manufacturers. Guess who blinked first.
So If I paid for subscription I would find by the end of the month I could no longer use it. So that would be great value for money..
I currently get emails from Strava on the iPad I’m using. Club mates giving me kudos and invites to club events all of which I can no longer open when they up graded something about 3 months ago so I’m no longer compatible.

I’m afraid I can’t sympathise with you. Why do you expect someone to provide you with a free service?
You don’t say which iPhone or iOS system you are running, but it’s highly likely it will cease to function with the later security and apps. How long do you think Apple should continue to support their devices?
Surely that’s incorrect, it would go out of business without its subscribers.
Unless of course it’s a Chinese Government snooping app.

That is true of every app which is actively supported. They all have upgrades, and at some point, an upgrade will make it incompatible with old versions of iOS or Android.

It needs both.
The subscribers provide the main income, but without those using it free, it wouldn't have the volume of usage necessary to make it useful for many subscribers.
Because Strava offer a free service I don’t expect anything other than what they advertise.
I’d agree if that was when the app was new and needed volume. What benefit does Strava now get from those who only use the free version.
Im not suggesting Strava shouldnt have a free or trial version for a limited time. I used it for free myself and started paying when they took away the ability to create routes.

They have never advertised that it will always be compatible with all older phones. AFAIK, no app provider would advertise that, because it would prevent them taking advantage of some facilities in more recent version of the OS.

The benefit they get is volume.
If they suddenly turned the free option into a 30 day trial now, they would lose a very large proportion of their currently free users. Which would mean very much less data flowing through, making it much less useful for those who really take advantage of the paid services, so they would also then start losing them over time.
