I thought you were talking about trying to use the Strava application on the iPad and not being able to there either. Sounds like you need to beg to borrow one of the actual computers then!

Yes that would be the obvious thing to do but yesterday I needed to borrow Mrs W iPad to send a donation to old climbing partners Gofundme account. He lives off grid in Canada and has had a stroke.
My IPad yet again wouldn’t work.
In asking to use said iPad I might have well asked to borrow her underwear.😱🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m allowed to buy bike stuff, new suits, expensive shoes but if I bugg£r about with her technology I‘m in deep sh!t.

I doesn’t as I said above it said above.

It says I need iOS 17 which clearly my iPad doesn’t have. As I’ve said earlier when I try to go in to zstrava via the emails I get sent it won’t let me log in.

That will be the strava app on your iPad. The browser version doesn't need any specific version.

Well tell her you need to buy a new phone or tablet then. Or encourage her to get a new one, and pass her current one on to you

What’s the browser version🤷🏼‍♂️
It's what I was suggesting you use on your iPad above ....

Open a browser on the iPad. Go to http://www.strava.com/ Then put in your Strava username and password. This really should work.

As @Alex321 says, there is very little reason why the Strava web site should not work on a browser on an iPad unless it's profoundly ancient, which your iOS version is not. It's entirely reasonable and probable for the Strava applications not to run on 'old' hardware and software, but you really don't need to even try to do that.

I’m afraid that doesn’t work. It’s the same thing comes up,when I get a club invite. I try to log in either with google, apple or email and nothing.
It did work up to a few months ago. Similar when I go on to the BBC Iplayer that no longer plays the videos.

And here's the thing, the Strava website is actually better on the iPad than the Strava app - this from personal experience because I tried to set it up on my wife's iPad. This is mainly because they haven't actually produced a Strava app specifically for the iPad, meaning you basically get the iPhone app but zoomed in so everything is double-sized and looks terrible. Whereas the browser version looks okay on an iPad screen (too small on an iPhone).

The critical mass effect. Paid subscribers represent about 0.5% of all users. Take away the 99.5% of users and what do you have left? Why would the paid subscribers stay if all their friends were no longer on it? Why would authorities pay for Strava data for planning? Why would investors continue to throw money at it, and keep it afloat? You do know that Strava is yet to make a profit, it keeps getting investor money thrown in.

It is primarily a social network, and without all the free users and their data, it is worth nothing.
I take your point which needed stating as I don't think of Strava in this way at all. My use is simply to upload my rides, browse my latest ride data with my post ride cup of tea. I'll probably look at my two ride buddies' data for the ride as well.

From time to time I might look back to see how today's ride times compares with a few years ago, in particular on climbs.

Very, very ocassionally I'll follow someone on a trip. For example a good friend is currently on LEJOG so I take a few minutes each evening to review his ride and make encouraging remarks. Other than this week I think the last time I did this was 2024.

The social network aspect is irrelevant to me, 10 👍 or 1000 for a ride is irrelevant. The "kudos" is a joke. One can post a ½ mile ride and people will give it a 👍 something I only do if I've looked at and recognised a friend has done something significant.

So, yes I take on board everything you say. It's a very valid view. For me if Strava closed tomorrow it wouldn't concern me one jot.

I'm just very amused by users with obsolete hardware and software, which they didn't pay for, complaining apps they don't pay for don't work. About ten years ago I asked a friend why he paid for Strava and RWGPS, he replied "I want them to be there in the future." I went home and signed up.

I would be very disappointed if RWGPS was to fail.

I agree with your wife on this one. I'm very reluctant to let Mrs P use my laptop. I know her habits when it comes to using IT tech and I prefer to sort out her devices for her rather than have to fix mine. My laptop is very well organised, hers is chaotic - "I've lost my file/work" "Where did you save it?" "I don't know" 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ It's a compromise that works.

In all seriousness have you considered upgrading some of your hardware in particular? Tech companies don't make themselves popular by rendering our equipment semi "obsolete." I'm posting this from a perfectly good 10 year old Surface Pro. It's a great machine but only runs the no longer supported Windows 10.

The idea of dumping a perfectly good machine, needs a new battery, goes against the grain and all my green principles. Unfortunately we live in a society that technically moves on, constantly upgrading in every area. IT tech suffers very bad press on this because it moves so quickly compared to "old, traditional" products and tech products have a long lifespan, beyond the tech support.

On Windows ten years of free support does seem reasonable. These companies have to make money. I haven't paid a £ towards supporting my Windows software - ever!

It is rather amusing but it’s rather like when we use the ITV Iplayer sometimes it just stops working for a few hours. So why would spend money on an up grade to X when it does seem that great to start with.

Off topic but this may be old device related too. I had same experience with old box, solved by upgrading with a £20 stick. I still get too many ads, but ITVx now runs fine.

I only use the app when I’m out, at home I use Strava on an internet explore by logging in, both on my iPad and desktop. But i do need my phone for security, that maybe something I inadvertently agreed to or setup.

I use a Garmin head unit that requires Garmin Drive as a go between it and Strava.

If you want their help you should expect to contribute, however were you to upgrade your phone it might work like it did before.

You have until recently had your cake and eaten it…..

Yes, this is quite likely. After perhaps 20 years we had to ditch our box as it no longer functioned. We gave away a TV to a young woman setting up her own home. All the apps we wanted had ceased to function, she knew this but was very happy to get a quality TV for free.

It's the world we live in

I may have had my cake and eaten it to a degree but we still have probably ten or so old lap tops, iPads, phones that we have bought that are now defunct. I know this how the modern world works but as others have said above it’s a bit of a p!sser.

I’m afraid I can’t sympathise with you. Why do you expect someone to provide you with a free service?

Errm, you're using a free service on this very forum.
If CC suddenly wanted a subscription for membership, would you continue to use it? I wouldn't. It's a useful site to use, but not important enough for me to justify paying for it. Which is exactly how I felt about Strava. I used it when it was free, but gave it up when it moved to subscription for access to anything useful. For the basics, Garmin Connect gives me all the stats I need, and it's free. As is RWGPS..
