A long while back, I was commuting home from college, when I went straight into the back of an illegally parked ford escort van. The result was a buckled wheel and a bruised shoulder. It was a perfectly clear straight road and the reason I hit it is because I didn't give it enough attention and misjudged my own speed.

It was the same spot where I also rode my motorbike into the back of a car, but the reasons for that was because I was in too much of a hurry to get somewhere and thus took too many risks filtering through traffic.

If anyone is interested V-brakes are no match for the brakes on a truck.

Completely OT; when cycling along George St a while back (an Urban Dual Carriage way with parking down the middle) I was overtaken by a truck in the outside lane, nothing special about that but at that very moment some woman (in the central parking area on his right) decided to push her buggy out in front of him OK I never saw her until I was just about past the cab but cantis are certainly no match for truck brakes :becool:

Here for rides.
This dates me, but as a yoof I took out the rear windscreen of a Rootes Fastback Sunbeam Rapier with my face. No helmets in those days. Concussed myself. Destroyed my sisters bike too. My excuse "Nobody in our street owns a car!". Those were the days. Same street now has 2 or 3 cars parked outside, gardens concreted over as car parks, etc., etc..

Me. Idiot.

I rode into the back of a van tonight coming down the hill into Stalybridge and have got a fairly sore elbow. All my fault, he did brake very sharply, but it's no excuse. He was very good about it and was much more concerned I was ok than worrying about his van.

Anyone done similar and can make me feel less of a pillock?

Going back a bit, I spreadeagled myself over the rear window of a hatchback, because I had been waving at the kiddy on the backseat instead of watching what was going on. I blame the kid - he waved at me first

Yep

as a teenager my shoulder (I was trying to swerve so hit shoulder-on rather than head-on) caved in the tailgate of a pug 205 and my Raleigh Sensor was also a write-off

Also as a kid, hurtled around a corner on my Raleigh Commando and got my front wheel wedged in between the box side and the wheel of the cycle trailer being pulled the opposite way

As a teenager I went headon into the front of a parked coach. Wasn't paying attention as I was looking at all the tooty in the swimming pool to my left! Pushed the forks back, rode the bike like that for years after.

Errrrr me too, last week.

In the queue to join a big roundabout. Watching the cars coming round the roundabout rather than the hatchback straight in front of me. She stopped sharpish at the line, as there was a huge gap on the rabout at the time I didn't expect her to stop and bounced off the boot.

Slow speed and nothing damaged except my pride.....

I got very close on another occasion too; I was following the coast road between Leith and Granton in the drops, when the driver slammed on his brakes a mille second later I found out why, the road was covered in oil. Thankfully I managed to stop in time but it was a brown trouser stain moment (all of my own doing I should have been on the hoods and more alert  )

Oooooh yes - did that a year or so back. Approaching traffic tailing back from a set of traffic lights, I eased off and began braking. As I got closer, I could see the lights change and the brake lights go off as the cars pulled away. So, off with the brakes and I put the power down - just as the car in front decided to let someone out of a side-road and braked sharply. What with it being a damp night, no matter how hard I hauled at the brakes there was no way I could stop and I performed a classic cartoon slam'n'slide down the back window...

Bars bent down a bit, a few bruises but no other damage to me or the car thankfully!

It was Christmas, at 14 years of age I was excited with my new 5 speed racer and whilst watching how the gears shifted so effortlessly I proceeded to cycle into the back of the neighbours parked car and buckled my front wheel....

Dented the roof on a PO van with my head once when travelling too fast for traffic conditions. He braked sharply after the traffic was moving off at traffic lights. I had the hammer down as i was late for an exam. damaged bars and head, but luckily front wheel OK so had a few words and then carried on.

Hit a car when it stalled just as i got clipped in and toppled sideways.

A few times as a younger man distracted by pretty girls, these days I have faced the reality that they want the guy in the ferrari so I don't get so distracted anymore.

Yep.

Done that myself. Straight into the back of a Transit.

Luckily, the van was worth about £200, and you couldn't tell were one dent ended and the next started. The bloke was excellent, more bothered that I was ok, which was nice.

No severe damage to my bike, although I ached for a few days...

I did something rather silly today, it was 100% my fault for not paying attention and taking the correct action. Fortunately I got away with a near miss and didn't end up sprawled over the bonnet of a taxi. What makes this mistake particularly silly is that moments earlier I had waited till a luton type lorry went up the road before turning right to make sure there were no hidden surprises. In this situation I should have backed off before committing to overtake the parked car so that I could stop if anything was coming in the opposite direction.

edit: The video is a little bit shaky because of the road vibrations. This particular bit of road has a very uneven surface.
