What variations of SCR have you seen or do you play ?

If I have a training run into work I like to take it easy on the way home. This invites people from lower down the food chain to 'have a go'.

The sub game - Evil Commute Racing - is:
Wait for a victim to pop in front who is obviously slower than your usual pace, up your speed a little and see how much pain you can inflict. Bonus points for the amount of times they look back at you and for the length of time you can hold them for.

 Mwahahahahaaaaa

My favourite sub genre is the one where you finally realise some dork has either been racing you or trying to entice you to race. So you rouse yourself from your private enjoyment of your commute and, when you're both stopped, get off your bike, twat them one, then continue to enjoy your ride in peace....bit like swatting an annoying fly.

'SILLY Commuter Racing'; stress the silly part, although I must admit I've been sucked in  I usually cruise along a cycle path at an OK'ish pace passing quite a few folk who naturally enough don't bother but occasionally you get somebody who desperately tries to re overtake and its fun to suddenly up the pace and blow them away. Touch wood I've never been sucked into a race on the road though.

The last thing I want is some knobhead sitting behind me thinking it is a game.
My bike gives other people on "racers" such a big advantage already they should be blasting off into the distance, if not the bikes are obviously too good for them.

Oooh. I wasn't expecting such an anti SCR response ! Is this an unwritten rule of CycleChat ?

It's only a laff and keeps you fit. You never quite know who is playing and who is not so in reality you are only battling your own mind. Its not about being the fastest. Its about going faster than people who look like they should be going faster. You don't have to play and wheel sucking a stranger is not honourable in my opinion.

Your post just came across as a little condescending to puffers and panters like me (hence my username ;)) who are just wheezing along, trying to do our best and get fed up with being smoked by sprightly race whippets.

Long as your enjoying your cycling, fair play

I am curious about how people observe the spirit of SCR when in heavy traffic? Does it count as a scalp if he gets ahead by filtering through a gap that you think is too risky? Also, what do you do on the approach to traffic lights? It's obviously not a scalp if you're just braking later than the other guy, but what if you're not sure whether he's anticipated the lights and started slowing down early or if you have worn him out and can justifiably claim a point?

Also, I need to know the official FCN for rollerskaters. I'd guess it to be about an 8 (MTB speed), but I'm puzzled as to how the fakenger rates a 5

I just go the speed I want to, if anyone wants to race me they can but I just keep do what I was doing before they showed up. General ignoring of the rules of the road in order to gain a few seconds is not my scene.

Apologies all round, it wasn't supposed to be condescending. SCR is about spotting an equal rider and attempting to push your own level a little further.

There is no honour in a roadie overtaking anyone else [edit: except mopeds/cars], but there is great honour to be gained from overtaking a roadie and leaving them behind.

I doth my Rapha cycling cap to anyone out there on two wheels.

I back off the SCR in traffic. This was one of the other sub genres I was thinking about - Suicidal Commute Racing.

I thought the rule about traffic lights was that you had to get ahead enough to go through on green then the follower gets stuck at a red. If you both end up waiting at the same lights you have not scalped. It must be hard in London though - too many lights.

Its just a bit of fun, dont know why some people get upset about it. If someone is just going along at their own pace then its not a scalp and i certainly would never look down my nose at those going slower because i know that to many other cyclists i am the slow guy.

I dont really do the evil commuter racing but always have a laugh to myself when someone bursts a gut to get by but pretty quickly it becomes noticeably that they then can't maintain the pace they used to get in front, so maintaining the same speed as previous will them being reeled in gradually then eventually overtake get a few lengths in front and put the hammer down knowing victory is assured...what is not to like about that
