I might be in the market for a new sport, and am looking for ideas.
It would ideally be:
1) low impact and biologically sympathetic
2) non adversarial
3) competitive
4) not require shed loads of cash outlay for equipment (but a bit is ok)
5) involve skill
6) either not require a team, or if it does, there must be plenty around looking for people to join
7) ideally able to be played in the evenings
8) not take too long
9) quite difficult, i.e. not one where the world and his dog are shoot hot at it
10) not be too weather dependent
11) popular - lots of places offering it
12) non-boring
13) non-dangerous
14) ideally more conducive to losing weight than gaining, and not conducive to becoming an alcy.
I am considering golf - as it does brilliantly on (1) and (2), but falls down slightly on (7) and (8).
Tennis falls down on (10), and therefore (11). It also doesn't really improve on (2).
Cycle road racing and time trialling does ok at (1), (2), and (3), but road racing falls down on (4), (7), (8), (10), and (13), and time trialling falls down on (4), (5), (10), and (12), even if it does do well on (7).
Considered snooker and pool - they do great on most criteria, especially (5), (7) and (11), but fall down on (9) and (14).
Suggestions that tick all or most boxes gratefully received!
