Running.

My younger bro (has my genes :becool:) is a runner - bloody good 10K considering he doesn't do that much training. PS I kill him on a bike..... :becool:

o and i've got a suggestion. This year i did two open water swims. one mile at Manchester (Salford Quays) and two miles at the Lake District (Windermere).

It was bloody hard but... to be honest... a little bit of training wouldn't have gone amiss! (well, i know i can swim a mile in a pool so i couldn't be arsed LOL... 200 yards to the end of the two miler was i was beginning to regret that a little bit!)

but i've totally been bitten by the bug, even though it was freezing cole (manchester was 14 degrees! Brrrr!) and bloody hard work swimming in a wet suit. and i swear that Lake Windermere borrowed it's waves from the Atlantic that day! I'm doing all four Great Swims of Britain next year and i want to the the Alcatraz swim too

Some other suggestions, without a lot of regard to your selection criteria:-

Rowing

Not as expensive as people think.
The ultimate team sport (or solo sport - single scull)

Croquet

Extremely competitive - lots of strategic thinking required - Chess with balls
Not affected by the weather - they only stop if there is a danger of being struck by lightning

Fencing

Attracts all sorts - you will meet a wide variety of people.
A club will provide the equipment until you get hooked enough to buy your own. Weapons are surprisingly inexpensive.

Steeplechase

Middle distance running with obstacles
If you can run you can start training now.

But aren't most open waters in the uk choppy, and full of fish, seaweed, shopping trolleys and piss? I know sutton res certainly is.

Where would you suggest? If I set off from blackpool I doubt I could make it to ireland, or probably even the isle of man.

I haven't played rugby since a Cumbrian farmer tried to break my neck in a scrum. I figure this might not be quite as dangerous

should've stuck to playing rugby.

all good suggestions apart from:
Steeplechase

Middle distance running with obstacles

I think I've made my opinions on horses pretty clear in the past.

Weapons are surprisingly inexpensive.

This thread is about looking for a new sport, but that's an excellent piece of advice nonetheless.

Bog snorkelling

1) low impact and biologically sympathetic
tick (compared to off-roading)
2) non adversarial
tick
3) competitive
tick
4) not require shed loads of cash outlay for equipment (but a bit is ok)
tick
5) involve skill
tick (you have to find a suitable bog)
6) either not require a team, or if it does, there must be plenty around looking for people to join
tick (strange but true)
7) ideally able to be played in the evenings
tick (bring your own floddlighting)
8) not take too long
tick
9) quite difficult, i.e. not one where the world and his dog are shoot hot at it
tick?
10) not be too weather dependent
hmmm.. In the UK? tick
11) popular - lots of places offering it
doubtful, but it's catching on
12) non-boring
subjective. You decide
13) non-dangerous
see 5)
14) ideally more conducive to losing weight than gaining, and not conducive to becoming an alcy.
probably. Most bogs are non-alcoholic.
