Nicely posed picture of concerned man with a railing which could impale his dog - top effort!

Hmmm

He seems genuine enough, and given he's spoken to the volunteers.....

I'm going to try and remember to follow this, see what happens.

Looks like he was doing a good deed, most charities couldn't give a sh*t these days anyway all they want is publicity. Many charities I've supported have recently been convicted of not giving near as much funds as they should to the needy, and I contacted the RBL (the poppy people) about a sponsored ride to raise money for there rehab centre and got told they didn't want/need my help.

Cutting back the undergrowth is good, but removing 130 metres of metal railing?
Mind you there's never a day goes by that I don't see a dog impaled on a metal railing somewhere, dangerous stuff it is:whistle:.

It's not public land - it's private land which the public are given permissive access to for certain activities, and that is the crux of the issue.

This is typical of Sustrans attitude in the North (I can not speak for the South) and why they have such a bad name in the South Tyne Valley. Instead of doing what any sensible organisation would do and going to see the person involved in a potential dispute and diffusing it with a common sense approach. They go in mob handed and straight to the police. Of course this immediately puts the backs up of every local in an area that is not noted for letting one of it's own to be bullied by a bunch of bureaucratic thugs. Let us just hope that some one in Sustran HQ see's sense and quietly settles the matter but I doubt if they will.

Would it not been an idea for him to contact Sustrans directly first? Just having a word with a couple of volunteers isn't really getting permission is it?

If it was his metal railing he could do what he likes but if it wasn't he had no right to take it down and sell it. Sounds ridiculous when it's taken out of context.

I do not think we have heard the full story of who owns what and who has what rights over the land in question but I still think Sustran were wrong to go straight to the police with out trying to sort it out first. Sound almost as if they have already put backs up in this area.

Not a case that reflects well on Sustrans. But then I think they are a waste of space anyway. The idea behind Sustrans is brilliant, the execution is so variable that I stopped using their farcilities some time ago, having previously been a Ranger for them for several years I gave that up when I found that trying to get them to make their routes sensible was a waste of time.

I read this story at the weekend and I got the impression that Suntrans complaint was H&S because the bench he built wasn't safe.
