Your personal time trial track . Decided to leave the bike today and take my wife ,kids and the dog down the fallowfield loop because my wife had never heard of these before I mentioned them and all was going great with a lovely peaceful walk chatting and laughing when all of a sudden in the distance I spot a cyclist approaching so I told them all to pull over told the left .
The cyclist shot by face lime thunder head to foot in Lycra and sweat at a speed I don't want to imagine , he didn't slow as he passed a d to look at him you'd think he was trying to win Olympic gold.
Now don't get me wrong if time trials and all that bollox is your thing so be it enjoy , but its not for me I prefer to go out for a ride and actually enjoy the scenery and pedal at a more sedate pace and not panic every dog and kid I pass . Really if you want to play wannabe wiggo why don't they head to a track or somewhere they are less likely to run into people enjoying the walk I honestly don't get it and don't think I'll be returning there with my family as I don't want them to get hit by some idiot who thinks he's going for the yellow jersey .
Rant over

@Colin B totally agree with you and especially on the Floop with its access points and littering and narrow bits and all that, but maybe they were heading to/from the Velodrome and were warming up or down so were kind of in track mode.

Not an excuse tho, consideration for others isn't something that we should just demand from drivers.

I honestly don't get this style of riding unless its for athletes training who would use a track . IMHO bicycle riders should only be allowed to go fast if they go weeeeeeeee as they do it, trust me I've tried it makes it loads more fun

A few Sundays ago while riding along the Rochdale canal between Slattocks and Castleton, I stopped for a coffee and a was chatting with a few of the dog walkers and other people generaly enjoying a Sunday stroll along the canal.
The one topic of conversation which kept cropping up was the behaviour of cyclists along the towpath. Every one of the walkers who stopped to say hello made some sort of comment about people on bikes flying past without any regard for safety.
As I was having a conversation with a dog walker 3 guys on mountain bikes were tearing along the path towards us. The dog walker stepped further away from the canal to give more space for them to pass but the dog sitting next to her stayed sat where it was. The lead bike suddenly hit the brakes and skidded to a halt, the second bike did the same and almost colided with the lead bike but the guy making up the rear wasnt so quick with his reactions and skidded into the back of the second bike knocking the rider off balance and into the canal.
Once I had stopped laughing enough to ride I retrieved my own bike from behind the bench where I had been sitting and carried on my ride. My only regret was not having a camera with me to record their faces as they colided and then the realisation one of them was going for a swim.

We like to ride on the Marriotts Way (Cycleway #1). We also walk along it with dogs and friends. When we cycle we slow down for all the other path users but there are plenty who don't. People stop to chat along there, or pick blackberries, push prams and try to wrangle children who are tearing around. A racetrack it is not and I totally understand where the OP is coming from. I am not saying that we are perfect cyclists but we do ride along there at a sensible sort of pace, especially on the thin bits.

Within 200 yards of any access point to a Sustrans route around this way is covered in dog poo.

Can anybody tell me what Sustrans stands for.

Dog poo isn't the fault of Sustrans. Some of the facilities they provide might be crap though, although some are wonderful.

Whoa! do not get me wrong I think Sustrans is fantastic, I have a route runs right past my house and I use it a lot. I was just making a point about the dog poo, mind you they could employ people who when they trim the Hawthorne do allow it to lay on the track.
