@User9609 - Just a rumination about how the adults know which young to feed. Having worked with young children, you know pretty soon in the morning which ones have had breakfast and which ones haven't. I've no idea about swallow's sense of smell but a simple feed (or take sac from) the smelliest one first and, if it all smells hungry, feed the loudest (i.e. the liveliest) first strategy could work quite simply.

The dog doesn't sound too impressed with the birdies getting all the attention.

Sabor (the GSD I had) used to make that noise whenever he was excluded from what I was doing.
Maz used to say he was my shadow/assistant as he was almost glued to me whenever he could be.

Once again my favourite thread of the year. It all seemed so quick this year from egg to fledge.

Thank you @User9609, looking forward to her next batch.
What she said ^^^^^^

Fantastic thread! Do you only get one pair each year? And if so do you think it's the same pair?

For a long time we had just one nest and then a couple of years ago two more appeared, this year they're taking over. We now have 11 nests in 5 stables and the covered area where the straw and hay are kept. 8 families have left their nests and are now getting the hang of flying at speed, one nest looks as though they're only a few days old and the other 2 nests have only just been built. I've been watching the build quite closely as one of them is only 4 feet above Reds stable door (I'll have to get him a hat ) they pick up bits of hay or straw then dunk it in a puddle near by and then again in the mud before flying up to the selected spot for the build.
3 weeks ago I counted 40 birds all perched on the tye rods in the barn and it looks like more to come.
