Have any of you done it? My therapist/advisor from the job club has suggested i go to a beginners class which is being held tomorrow. I'm a bit apprehensive. Isn't it a bit poncy i ask?
I've been doing Tai Chi for 8 years. I attend a class every monday run in a town hall by an organisation called LFA.
Forget all the workout and fighting stuff. If you want to fight using Tai Chi I believe you can only learn it officially in a temple in Manchester.
There are various forms, some have you moving closer to the ground than most. The one I do is Lee style which is very low impact.
Poncy? No. This is all about stress relief, gentle exercise, the gathering and use of energy, and reorienting the mind.
It has changed me. Some of the effects can be startling.
All that I'd ask is that you don't judge it by one session. Try 5 or 6 sessions before you judge - because things like Taoist walks can seem weird, and learning elements of the form can take a while. Also - big hint - stand in the middle of the class. That way you can see what others are doing next when you turn left or right.
