Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a good match with Krav Maga which is effective but somewhat crude as required by a system that gets you fighting capable ASAP. Tai Chi will add power to all of your moves. People come to Krav Maga with all kinds of skills and are encouraged to use what they have as a foundation.

I think Tai Chi can add something as can many different styles. If I had my time again and didn't have my health issues, I wouldn't hesitate to learn Krav Maga as well as a firm foundation in boxing.

Don't think that just because someone has some weight to them they can punch extremely hard. Punching is more technique than just stretching out a heavy arm. I watched a Jiu Jitsu sensei(tutor) punch through a B&Q wooden door once. He was only about 11 stone in weight. He said that punching starts at the shoulder...or summat like that.

Nod note: I'm nodding off. Don't let PIP team see you "crouching like a dragon", or you'll be in for a chat with Benny Fitz and His Karate All-Stars. One gets quite a lather on perfecting a combat martial art so better get a plug on that Hotpoint pronto. Yawn, Accy-san, Yawn like a tiger.

Ah that old chestnut, I would much rather have a badly thrown punch from an eight stone person than a badly thrown punch from a 15 stone person momentum is a force to be reckoned with

My wife has just started and loves it. She finds it very relaxing, and it gets her out of the house

No But your neighbours do. SHUT THAT CURTAIN

Have any of you done it? My therapist/advisor from the job club has suggested i go to a beginners class which is being held tomorrow. I'm a bit apprehensive. Isn't it a bit poncy i ask?

I've been doing Tai Chi for 8 years. I attend a class every monday run in a town hall by an organisation called LFA.
Forget all the workout and fighting stuff. If you want to fight using Tai Chi I believe you can only learn it officially in a temple in Manchester.
There are various forms, some have you moving closer to the ground than most. The one I do is Lee style which is very low impact.

Poncy? No. This is all about stress relief, gentle exercise, the gathering and use of energy, and reorienting the mind.
It has changed me. Some of the effects can be startling.

All that I'd ask is that you don't judge it by one session. Try 5 or 6 sessions before you judge - because things like Taoist walks can seem weird, and learning elements of the form can take a while. Also - big hint - stand in the middle of the class. That way you can see what others are doing next when you turn left or right.
