Take-away coffee... but sitting in the cafe to drink it?

Rother valley cafe, people they don't like/all cyclists get punished by being given a paper cup instead of a proper cup no matter if they sit down or take away.

I take a Thermos flask up there now and sit on a bench. Then I ride to poolsbrook (not open monday or tuesday but the toilets are) and get chips for £1.

I think it is something like food, you cannot buy a sarnie in a supermarket then eat it in their cafe .It is to do with vat on food in cafes.
it think you may be right.

That said, the likes of Starbucks aren't that hot on paying taxes in the UK. To keep 'profits' low and thus avoid a shedload of tax they buy their coffee from a mainland European subsidiary at £3000 a kg, thus neatly transferring their income to a lower tax regime. That being the case I don't think they have the grounds to whittle if some customers indulge in a spot of tax avoidance themselves.

Never occurred to me that people sitting in might ask for their coffee in a paper cup thingy. You may be right.

The one time I did get a take-out drink from a cafe (for me, the sit down is part of the pleasure: if I'm in that much of a rush, I tend to bring a coffee from home in a travel mug) I did seem to get a bigger drink for my money by having a paper cup than having it served in a cup. Perhaps it was my imagination but if definitely seemed that way. Maybe that's another factor?

Really? I mean really? Is the op a tongue in cheek one, or is it serious? If its the latter i suggest a long hard look around the world in which we live....

Some places can't be bothered washing up cups and saucers so give everyone paper cups... they even tell people their dishwasher is broken sometimes. Mentioning no names but it begins with costa.

If you sit an drink a coffee
They should be paying VAT.

HMRC agents will follow them home, kick their doors in, steal their computers and plant kiddie porn.
That will teach them a lesson.
I know this is a joke but it's not the customers job to pay VAT, it's the cafe's job to collect VAT and pay it to the government. If you get a VAT free coffee and then drink it in the cafe, the cafe owners are not doing their job collecting VAT. They're the ones who may get in trouble.

I firmly (want to) believe that HMRC would not pursue this.

A bit like some French town centres. The number of them I've been in where the toilets are being 'renovated' is incredible.

Some of the French ones are so unrenovated you'd be better off wazzing in the street.
