Tales from today's commute....

A crap night's kip again but at least the outside was relatively mild and dry upon departing.

It felt good to get out and crossing the railway bridge to witness the tracks stretching off into the distance lined with golden leaves either side raised the ride's first big smile

No gloves today; hands got cold but it didn't bother me. Traffic sucked but wasn't a huge issue, one or two bellends about but they were all pretty tame. Sausages passable if the least-impressive of the week.

The distance I'm regularly covering is falling and I know it's going to get harder, however being able to leave the car at home remains a conspicuous, very welcome privilege.

What an ideal for living to have the ability to maintain my physical and mental wellbeing (or at least resist their decline) doing something constructive and necessary and at the same time avoiding being just another unthinking, conformist muppet

Got the bike out this morning and had to pump up the back tyre , whilst on the way to work I got another slow puncture on the front so had to stop twice to pump it up as I didn't feel like trying to locate the offending article in the dark so I will sort it out before I go home

IIRC I'm down to about 450 miles on the rolling 30-day mean (from a high of 650-700 miles during the summer) however I expect this to fall further as the weather worsens. It's still by far the greatest distance covered for the longest sustained period that I've ever managed, so I mustn't grumble

That's near the same as me, I dropped from about 900 from when I moved late last year.

Crikey - you were doing well with that! Is most of yours commuting? Were I really lazy I could get away with about six miles a day total, however typically if I can this gets pushed out to 20 or 30 with a bit of leisure mincing and post-work trips to the shops or part for a bit of time on the rings..

It is these days along with 1 or 2 very long rides at the weekends.

Yeah it does work well.
For the last 18 years I did 30+ miles a day commuting, now down to 17. I am missing the longer daily distance but as I'm getting older, my body is thanking me. I still do a nice 27 miler home on a Friday though when the weather is good and dry.

Nice to have the option of a longer run; not sure I'd be committed enough to do that after a day at work however!

I'm lucky in that on Fridays I only do half day.

My commute is down big time. I used to have a minimum of 11 miles to the old office and it was delightful to extend it. We moved office though and the new office is less than a mile from it. I also moved close to a group ride start. I did get of early for a while but its not an exciting commute so most days (which is only twice a week at most) is just the minimum 4 miles to the station and the 0.8miles the other side, and I get back for the group ride in the summer or turbore training in the winter.

I bloody hate that. I have to use an old radiator at work to dry my gear. A while back I but all the gear on to dry, then forgot to turn it on. That was a nice damp ride home.

Im guessing theyve turned the heating down, it was always a good few degrees warmer than the rest of the building, to save money, which makes sense in summer, but at this time of year its going to be a pain if I cant dry kit out properly anymore if I get soaked riding in, and I cant even resort to the old tactic I had before access to the drying room, of using the hand dryer in the toilets, not least they also dont chuck out heated air anymore, but theyve been replaced by these rather useless low energy ones that dont even dry your hands properly anymore.
